Overdrive switch

So I mostly drive with overdrive off....I can shut overdrive off with no problem. However when I hit the button a second time, overdrive will not reengage. It does reengage on a restart of the vehicle.

I'm about to order a new switch.

Any thoughts towards this being something other than the switch? Perhaps a common thing somewhere else in the system? Or just order the switch?

Thanks

It's not the switch. Are you briefly backing off on the gas pedal so the computer will know to reengage Overdrive? Is the Overdrive light turning back off when you push the switch to reengage Overdrive?

Thanks Jerry.

Once the light is lit, and overdrive is off via the switch. It stays that way untill I shut off the vehicle and start it back up.

I will pay closer attention to what I'm doing with the gas pedal next time I drive it but I'm pretty certain I've hit the thing even at stoplights.

Maybe you need to re- gear for your tire size, and not have to turn off the overdrive.

Did letting off the gas work for you? Just curious. Mine will switch back and forth by just flipping the switch but if I ever have a problem I know what to try.

Thanks....But with 31's I think my gearing is fine.
In reality, Jeeps that come with 3.73 gearing and the 42RLE transmission with its .69 Overdrive ratio are undergeared to begin with... 31's just makes it worse. Your engine is constantly on the verge of lugging at the low rpms it is forced to cruise at. Jeep was trying to eke out as many mpg as they could with that gearing but they overdid it when they went with the 42RLE's stupid-steep .69 Overdrive ratio. 3.73 is fine for 30" tires with the 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions because their Overdrive ratios are not nearly as steep.

No joy.

I agree, and I understand. But it ain't that big a deal for me. I can hit the od off button many many times for the 1000$ plus for a regear.

I am going to change out the switch this weekend sometime. If that doesn't work I'll most likely leave it since I never really want to turn it on any way.

All that switch is is a momentary on switch. It doesn't have an on or off position... it just sends a brief ground to the computer to toggle the OD from whatever state it's in to the other state. It's like your like a horn button.

Ok. So if it works to shut off overdrive it works. So the problem would lie in the computer. Thank you. I may be letting this annoyance go then. Doesn't seem worth the hassle to chase that down.

You solve the overdrive problem, but you're lower gears are still to tall, and kill performance, fuel economy, and transmission life. It's like constantly towing a trailer, brakes included.

Even the brakes huh..

I've towed a lot of trailers for a few thousand miles over the years. My tj doesn't quite feel like that.

Last tank was 14 MPG. Not to shabby.
