Greetings - I have been working to resolve drivetrain issues with my 97 TJ for the past many months and it was finally running real well with the exception of two issues - the P0441 code which I've had for several months, and a tapping noise from my 4.0 which just started.
For the P0441 I've replaced the purge valve solenoid, charcoal cannister, and the vacuum lines in the engine compartment. I've replaced the gas cap with a Mopar part and have visually inspected the lines going back to the gas tank and filler the best I can. None of these has resolved the issue. I've bought a smoker and that will be the next step. Is there an additive to the smoke fluid that will make it more visible - maybe a UV additive - it's pretty cramped around that area? Also, Is there a way to verify the signal the purge valve is receiving from the ECM - I have a good quality multimeter? Any other suggestions for finding this leak and resolving the issue? I would be extremely grateful - can't register it until it passes emissions and I can't do that with a CEL......
For the tapping noise - it began shortly after my son did an oil change. The engine has ran smoothly, and been leak-free and reliable, for the 15+ years we've had this Jeep, with no issues other than replacing a water pump and PS pump. After the oil change - the very first time it was started - a tapping noise was very evident. Thinking it is a lifter, I added some SeaFoam and Marvel Mystery oil on recommendations from some fellow Jeepers here in AZ. It hasn't made a difference but I've only run the engine for a short while. How many miles should I put on the Jeep to let these work? Anything else I should do? I did remove the serpentine belt to make sure it wasn't something else and it wasn't. I should also mention that my son used 5W-30 oil when what I've used in the past was 30W oil....... but I can't imagine that causing the noise........ but happy to go back to straight 30W if those with more knowledge think that will help.
