I’m a week or so out from rebuilding my frontend differential (Dana 30). I have contacted Autozone, O’Reilly, Advanced Auto Parts, and NAPA. None of them offer this tool for rent. Is it really necessary that I use one? Can I just use the same washers/shims that are already installed in my Dana 30?

Thank you!

Thank you!

Use the original pinion depth shim, set backlash, and run a pattern. Adjust pinion depth as necessary.

X2 on reusing the old shim as a starting point. You can also purchase an extra large bearing and bring the inside to allow it to pull on and off. Use this bearing to get everything set up, when correct disassemble and install bearing and reassemble.
