Play in transfer case front output shaft

Hello all! First time posting, long time scourer of info!

I've read quite a few posts about rotational play for the front output on jeep transfer cases but mine appears to have some back and forth play and I was wondering if that was normal. With how easy it is to move I was concerned.

Ignore the grinding sound at the end thats the ratchet wrap holding the case to the jack.

That’s not normal. It does however look like the yoke has movement rather than the output shaft.

The torque specs for that nut are 90-130 ft/lbs, generally. If it was not properly set previously you can try to tighten it to spec. If the nut’s not the issue, you’ll need to have it rebuilt, at least bearings and seals. Definitely do not drive with your front driveshaft connected while there is so much play.

Sorry I definitely meant the yoke! Ill torque it down and see where that leaves me. Its far from drivable so no sweat on adding another job to the project list.

Update!

The nut wasn't at maybe 50 ft/lbs. There is zero play in the yoke now. Thanks again
