Problems going back to stock radio

Took out a aftermarket radio trying to go back to stock. The original wiring harness still present... was hoping it would be plug and play but it was plug and pray. When I get everything hooked up the radio wasn't working right. No display, could hear radio but only out of front speakers. The no display was the big part. I got the radio for pretty cheap so I am wondering if it's bad or I am missing something.

The aftermarket radio had what looked like a grounding strap hooked in to it that I had to cut.

The stock radio has another white connector in the back with what looks like 2 wires. I can't find this connector in the my vehicle. All I have is the large gray and black, the antenna, and a grounding strap that I guess I am going to have to modify to attach? The last couple pics I have found including a wiring harness for sale that looks like it has the white part.

The dash panel manual page looks like the "C219 RADIO CCD BUS CONNECTOR" comes out of the wiring harness but it doesn't look like I have it on mine.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Have you looked under the foam to see how many and what color wires are where I've marked the orange?


What year manual did you pull that diagram from? Based on your username, I'm assuming you have a 1998. I looked in the 1998 FSM and the diagram looks the same but that CCD connecter is not marked.

Yes, sorry... it is a 98. The foam is just covering the ground strap, there are no wires in there. Now that I look in the correct manual, I think you are right that the CCD connector may not exist for this year.

I wonder if not having it grounded could be causing the issues. I tried to temporary attach the ground to see if that helped but I wasn't too confident in the connection. Perhaps I will work on that and see if I can get something more sturdy and see if it makes a difference

Mine is a 2003 but I think the grounding will be similar. There's a metal tab on the back and a connector from the wiring harness has a friction slip fit onto it. I think the tab on mine also has a hole thru the end so you could temporarily hook the wire thru there to test it. The tab I was referring to is visible in the photo I marked up to the left of the black and grey connectors.

I'd think not having a ground to the radio could cause some strange operation so hopefully it's as simple as that.

I'm going to try the ground thing but I doubt that solves my problems. What would be nice is to figure out what the white connector is and can you use this stereo without anything plugged in to it

Grounding it didn't help. Guessing it's a bad unit but I will report back once I have it sorted out.
