How hard is it to program a PCM for a 2005 TJ? The local Jeep dealership determined my PCM went bad causing my no start issue and has had my Jeep for two weeks trying to program a new PCM they got from Chrysler. They said they can get my Vin and mileage loaded into it but can’t get any of the engine files to download. Tomorrow is the day. It’s either fixed or I’m having it brought home. Does the PCM have to be in the Jeep to be programmed or can I just take this new blank PCM to a different dealership and get it programmed without towing the vehicle there? Can I order a preprogrammed PCM ready to go online somewhere if that fails?

No friggin' clue whatsoever. My understanding is that the dealership (or an authorized Jeep repair shop) has to do it. I'm not sure what that requires though. I do know that you can't buy a pre-programmed PCM, someone has to actually program it and transfer your mileage and everything onto it.

Has the dealership been trying to program the PCM for two weeks, or did you drop the jeep off two weeks ago and then they ordered the PCM at that time, which could imply they received the PCM two days ago?

If the dealership received the PCM a couple weeks ago, it then sounds like Chrysler sent them a defective PCM and the dealership should send it back for another one.

If I was you I would let the dealership deal with Chrysler on this one. Just keep on them, and if you need to call Chrysler give them a call to determine why this is taking so long.

Just putting this out there, but there are online places selling refurbished ones. You give them your vin and mileage and they set it up to be plug and play I believe.. others on here might know what I’m talking about and also know a good site to try if you go that way.

I do agree, let the dealer have a little more time to figure it out.. especially if they can get a new pcm..

Two weeks ago it was blamed on how Chrysler changed up programming the PCM which requires new equipment they aren’t used to, then it was the technician that was working on it was off for a few days and a bad laptop cable being used. Last week it was had to order new computer cables, wrong computer cables being used, had to borrow cables from neighboring dealer. Now it’s they can’t get the files downloaded into PCM. Anybody got Chrysler’s complaint department phone number? If it isn’t running this evening I need to make a call.

Boinked, have you actually dealt with them?
I had an issue on a road trip where after 8 hours on freeway, i got off and was driving about 30mph when the TJ lurched twice, and stopped. It restarted, but the engine light was on. I found a local Jeep dealer. They were vague on what the problem was. They said it did not appear to be a standard computer. (I did not buy it new, so I don't know)They ended up not doing anything (other than get the light off) and it has not happened since, but I am nervous about it.
They said a new computer would be about 1,200, but none were available anyway.

I have not dealt with them. Luckily i have not had to. they seem reputable from other forums i have visited. I do like that fact you can call them and talk to them on the phone before you buy anything.

from their FAQ

Q. I’m not sure my computer is bad. How do I send it in for testing?
A. Simply contact us we can walk you through the process.

As far as what caused the problem. I am not convinced it is your computer. most any computer fails it stays failed. Without knowing the code that appeared its hard to guess. My advise ( because i am no computer expert ) call them and tell them what happened. they should know if it is a computer problem or just a fluke.
