Pulsing vibration over 60 mph

I have a 2000 Sahara that I did a frame swap on. Came out real nice. Since then, I have an annoying deep pulsing vibration at 60. You know, on for 2 seconds then off for two seconds and repeats. I have replaced a lot. Most everything you might think of. I have driven it with the front DS out and with the rear DS out. Same thing. It has a new set of rims and tires that have been road force balanced twice. No change. The only one thing that seemed to make a small difference is when I replaced both rear springs that might have changed the pinion angle slightly. But then, why does it still vibrate with the rear drive shaft removed? Its very perplexing. Any thoughts anyone might have would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Seems like you are looking at most of the common culprits. Where do you feel it the most (steering wheel, gear shift, foot pedals-likely not at 60mph :) )? Maybe out of round brake rotors?

Definitely not in the steering wheel. Felt mostly in the seat. Vibrates while accelerating once it reaches 60 and also while decelerating until it drops below 60.

You have ruled out driveshafts and pinion angles.

Only at 60MPH+ so it has to be something turning.

My mind went to motor mounts. But they would do that at higher rpms not MPH.

If you are sure that the tires are good. And you dont feel it in the steering you can move every to the rear. Because you feel it without the rear drive shaft. Next thing I would check is rear axel barring and shafts. MAYBE!!!!!!
If you have rear disk rotors check them for warping. If you have drums check them for proper adjustment.

After thinking about it for a minute. Right under the seat it the transfer case. Tu ou could try dropping it in 4lo and doing 15MPH. 1/4 the speed 60. Your transmission and engine will act like you are going 60MPH. And the input side of the transfer case will a also go at 60mph. If you feel no vibration then you can eliminate engine and transmission.

Just random thoughts..... hope it helps

Okay Boinked, great thinking! So I didn’t feel any vibrations in 4low at 20mph. So you’re saying that should rule out engine and transmission right? I have replaced the rear axel shafts, bearings and seals a wile back. It had no effect on the vibes. I replaced the rear brakes and drums recently with what I guess is cheap Chinese crap from Advanced Auto that seem to warp very quickly. It has a definite out of round feel when I apply the e brake while moving slowly. Any thoughts? Thanks Again!

This is just me thinking at a time when I should be sound asleep (you know...gotta use the can, so get up, then stop at the computer, check on the Jeep guys...), but have you considered clocking the driveshafts 180 degrees? I had the same type of cycling vibration on a car many years ago, and someone offered up that suggestion. When I gave it a try, it worked. Just a thought...

Ok up early on a Sunday is no fun..... brain is only working enough to get coffee and a smoke.

When you changed springs did you change your shocks. Just thinking about wheel hop. Maybe a bad control arm bushing.

Im just not sure if an out of round drum would cause it. If you bought them with a warranty get them replaced for free. Tell them they are warped. (They cant check or tell) and put new drums on then test for vibrations. (Don't worry about the shoes.)

It was the u joints at the axle shaft

Might try the front axle u joints. I have not had one go bad (knock on wood) they are before the steering so you might not be able to feel it in the wheel. And the control arm for the front mounts real close to the drivers seat.

I did change the shocks. Nothing special, Gabriel brand. When I swapped the frame I pretty much changed everything. Rear; New upper and lower control arms, new track bar. On another note... I have some backlash in the rear diff. Could there be something in there causing this? New axle shafts and bearings didn’t make a difference. Up front, were new upper and lower control arms, new hubs, u-joints and axle seals. New springs, shocks.

Well im down to stupid and dangerous ideas.

If you can find a shop with a dyno. It might help to run the rears on it. Then the fronts. You might be able to isolate it. To be honest I don't even know if the can handle 60+ MPH. I have never used one.

Ill probably be chastised for even suggesting this. If you put your rear axle on jack stands let your jeep idle while in first gear. Keep someone in the driver seat and never walk infront or under the jeep. Look and listen for any thing strange.

I've also been trying to track down a vibration. Have you looked at your transfer case front and rear output shafts for any play?

If it's not the wheels, tires, discs or drive shafts my guess would be the bearings. It could also be a bent axle/flange. Any leaks at the seals?

Hello 2005 TJ Rubicon. No still nothing. Brought it to a "Jeep only Specialist" and was told it was the front driveshaft. So we put in a new one of high quality, and yes, still there! I've been told this at least twice before and I've had both front and rears removed one at a time and the vibration is still there. Let me know if you have any luck because I'd love to find it one day. I guess I just have learned to live with it a bit even though it still drives me crazy.
