I recently bought a 2005 Sport X. 4.0L, six-speed. It came with 12.50 33s on black steel rims.
I think the tires stick out way too far from the fenders. Once these need replacing, I plan to go with 10.50 33s. Most of my driving is on pavement though I do intend to take it on some trails eventually.
I haven’t removed the wheels yet, but a quick look with my calibrated eyeballs and I suspect they are wider than 15X8. Also haven’t measured the backspacing yet. But my suspicion is the kid who owned this before me went for looks alone and not functionality or longevity.
So when it comes time, what do I want in wheels? I got 15X8 on 5X4.5 lug pattern, but what backspacing/offest for 33s on a TJ with 2.5” lift? I’ve seen everything from 3.75” to 4.5”. Do I need/want hub centric rings? My goals are better handling on pavement, no rubbing of course, and tires tucked in even with the fenders more.
Side note: it has 3.07 gearing. On the short list is getting that changed to something closer to 4.56 but I’d appreciate feedback on that, too.
Thanks!
