Question on re-gearing axles

That's what I was thinking. They look pretty easy to do too....pricey just for the u-joints. That's why I asked about the axles.

But upgrading the locker and inner and outer shafts to 30 spline chromoly is a good price at $400 either way. I think

where are you getting 30 spline chromoly shafts for $400?

It's my local shop. I beleive they are USA standard.

Amazon has them for 630 and he is giving me 10 year warranty so a good deal I think.
What 30 spline hubs? Alloy USA 30 spline hubs don't hold up, which is another reason I recommended above staying with 27 spline shafts. Good quality 27 spline 4340 alloy shafts are way more than up to wheeling hard trails with 35" tires and a locker. I wheeled my previous TJ on extra-difficult trails like Sledgehammer in Johnson Valley with f/r lockers with 4340 27 spline shafts up front with 35" tires without problem.

For what it’s worth, I drove mine on 33s with the OE 3.73 gears and 32rh for years.

When I finally decided to add lockers, I regeared to 4.10 at the same time.

The difference was immediately noticeable and I should have done it long before then.

I agree since I will stay with 33x10.5s but there really isn't a price difference so I'll just do the 30 spline upgrade . Not sure if I can get 27 spline much cheaper than $400 so I didnt ask.

They are USA standard not alloy USA. Apparently same thing as yukon shafts. The outers are 27 spline so no need for hubs, right?

So technically not a 30 spline all the way. The locker and inner will be 30 and outer will be 27.

Yeah I am adding lockers so it's a good time to upgrade. If I didnt want the lockers I would do the front rebuild only.

There's no benefit to having 30 spline inner shafts and 27 spline outers. Like having a 3/8" link at the end of a chain made with 1/2" links. My last axle breakage was a 27 spline outer stub shaft.

Thanks and from all your posts I know you know your stuff. I completely agree.

I just looked at the kits and the 27 inner and outer is about $90 less MSRP compared to the 30/27 set. The $400 price I got quoted is not too bad, I feel there wont be much difference at cost between them. So I didnt question it much. Maybe when I take it in I will ask how much cheaper if I get the 27 spline locker and inner shafts.

Thanks for your help!
