Hey guys, new to this forum. I had a few questions involving upgrading my axles. I have an 02 wrangler sport with Dana 30/Dana 35. It already has a super 35 kit with ox locker and 3.73 gears. I plan on going to 4.10s soon but my questions are, should I run a full locker or lsd up front and would the stock axle shafts be ok or should I upgrade them as well. I do not plan to go above a 33” tire. It’s an overlanding rig so I do more technical trail I guess than hardcore mud bogging. It’s also my daily driver. Thanks in advance.

What transmission? You might re-visit the 4.10 decision.

Stock shafts are fine w 33’s

Locker for sure.

That's a lot of money for such a small gearing upgrade. I'm not an automatic kind of guy, but there are a lot of folks here that are. For me, with a manual trans I wouldn't regear for that little bit. Run 32" tires and don't worry about rebuilding the axles. Or with an auto it might be doable for 33s and 3.73s.

If you plan on going to 35's you may want to be thinking 4.56. If it were me I'd be throwing a lunchbox locker in the front while you're in there with the regear.

I know jerry bransford and a few others said 4.10 with the 3 speed and 33s was perfect so I was goin by their recommendations and I’m changing the differentials anyway so while I’m in the axles I was gonna go ahead and do it all at once. Also should have clarified too the super 35 kit is not installed yet. I bought this Jeep from a friend and he had the axle kit and locker and also my mistake it has 3.07 factory gears. Sorry I’m looking at it as I’m filling out this thread

4.10 would indeed be a good gear ratio for 33" tires and the 32RH transmission, so I think you're on track there.

I would personally run a selectable locker up front, and you'd be wise to upgrade the axle shafts at the same time, especially if you plan on doing any sort of off-roading. It's good insurance at the very least.

That’s kinda what I was thinking on the shafts. Thanks for the link too man

Agreed...selectable up front especially if you will use 4 hi at speed a straight locker in the front is dangerous if you ever drive on snowy roads or 4 hi at speed on dirt roads...yep the 3 speed gets you in a position where no overdrive is there to offset deeper gears...4.10s are the consensus

FWIW, I drive off-road in WA snow with a Lunchbox locker up front. It's kind of like learning to drive with a Detroit in the rear. It has its quirks, but you go drive in a safe place and figure it out. The claim it is dangerous is a little overblown. If you have money lying around, sure, go for a selectable, but I don't think there is much snow and ice in South Carolina. Correct me if I'm wrong. A PowerTrax No Slip would be great and is great.

No $1,000 upgraded shafts needed for 33's. I wheel hard on rocks, mud, snow, and have never had a problem. If I went to 35's I would immediately upgrade shafts. Plus, if you decided to upgrade shafts later, changing shafts is an easy job you can do in a couple hours. No need to do it when re-gearing.

4.10 is perfect for your 33's.

But hell, do what you want, it's your money and your Jeep.

Going from 3.07's to 4.10's makes sense. That is a big enough improvement to warrant the change. 3.07's belong in a passenger car. Not a vehicle meant to go offroad needing low speed grunt.

Amazon had the ARB RD100 for $850 yesterday. Might be something to look into for your Dana 30 and stock shafts.

I just looked and it's back to $1k.
