Quick building code question

I have 2 steps going into my house from the garage. For the last week the garage has stunk like something was dead. I guess it was a small squirrel or chipmunk, hard to tell because it was pulling apart.

Anyway, is it ok to use spray foam to seal that small opening?

I see no reason you shouldn't. Other than the fact that it might smell for a while

Rodents can get through spray foam FWIW. Steel wool is a better option if you can't repair it with something more permanent.

A little more info or picture will get a better recommendation. Interior, exterior? Open cell foams (most spray foams) are susceptible to soaking up and holding water. If you fill a hole against wood with foam and it gets wet, well, that wood is usually gone within a few years, I've seen it a lot.

Yes a pic would help, I'm trying to picture it, are the steps concrete and pulling away from the stem wall? There are rodent repelling caulk and foam products made, whether they work is another matter.

Without seeing the opening, like Chris said, steel wool is best.
Most rodents love foam but wont eat through steel wool.

they sell an expanding foam that can jack up steps and walkways. might consider that.

building code? what's this building code you mention? do you know where you posted this?

Wood steps in the garage going into the house. I’ll just nail some scrap wood against it.

Wasn’t really thinking clearly after cleaning up that nastiness when I posted the question.
