Porch Pirates

AT&T has had a data breach and I’m seeing teens are flying to take your new iPhone 16 as it’s delivered. Somebody in att is giving out addresses and phone purchases 🤬

problem is they mail Iphones & whatnot to small towns too, if I'm one of these enterprising scumbags I might be thinking they're the perfect new frontier, filled with unsuspecting people that think they're hidden & leave their doors unlocked... pretty sure that's what brought them to my neighborhood, that and the tracking number they likely bought. If memory serves this is the first crime I've been made aware of in my neighborhood in my quarter-century living there, 2 days ago I thought my chances were pretty low too, so yea I'd stay aware.

This problem is getting worse, more prolific & more widespread by the day. I'm pretty late to this part of the party but it seems very apparent that the delivery companies themselves have people inside contributing to the problem. Could be the drivers themselves, or someone with access to all tracking numbers for everything they pick up from a given supplier, like Apple. Whoever is involved, these guys I saw 100% had the information and knew this phone was being delivered to that particular house within a specific time window, the original spot I saw them setup gave them a perfect view of the entire property.

From my buddy in Jamaica's facebook page: "Stealing is a bad occupation in Jamaica. Here the majority of the people have nothing. Taking nothing from those who have nothing is unforgiving and will leave you handless."

There are people inside the delivery companies who are doing this. I ordered a $3000 guitar and it was never delivered. I went down to the local UPS distribution center where it said it was last scanned. They reviewed the security footage and found that a new employee had stolen it.

He was fired and charges were pressed. Fortunately the company I ordered it through had a very good policy and I got my money back in two weeks.

Chris it occurs to me that as this problem continues to worsen there's an obvious solution that is staring us all in the face - stores! Remember those :ROFLMAO: ?

The trend away from brick & mortar and towards all things Bezos/Walmart/home delivery has been burning bright for how many years now, seemed to be a one-way street to the complete collapse of retail stores.

I'm starting to wonder if all this fuckery won't begin to reverse this trend.

Yep, of course as you likely already know, stores are dealing with record numbers of retail theft. So there is that!

What we really need to do is bring back real punishment for criminals.

Indeed. Though it would be far easier to control at the central location that is the brick & mortar store. Let's face it, the only reason retail theft is suddenly out of control is the unwillingness of corporate ownership to take any steps to stop it and the unwillingness in many municipalities to investigate/prosecute/punish it. Those issues can be effectively reversed overnight. It's much harder if not impossible to police every porch in America for this new breed of Ninja Pirates...

I've also heard of stories of these big box delivery trucks getting robbed on the way to deliver their goods. Brick and mortar is still the best option though, I agree. I guess the current plan is to just let everything descend into complete chaos until vigilante justice makes a full swing comeback.

I watched a documentary on this

Or until we get so tired of it we welcome a more authoritarian government. Not certain the increase in DAs refusing to charge thievery is accidental, or without a plan.

When crime gets bad enough we'll clamour for stronger leaders that push for a harder line, often at the expense of civil liberties. See Patriot Act for more information.

Yes, just like all of human history it's cyclical.

at the DA level I suspect it's just the result of the leftward shift they experience going through academic indoctrination. Being taught nonsense like chronic criminality is not a fault in the individual but a condition, a consequence of the "system" and the oppression they've been put through.

But take it far enough and yes, it's all straight from the progressive/marxist agenda.

The HUUUUGE problem with Brick-and-Mortar is they NEVER seem to have anything in stock - even when they supposedly sell something I need. I get sick and tired of going to 2 or 3 local stores and they don't have what I need, never heard of it, and don't stock it. Its easier to Google what I want, find the best price, and order it. Not very efficient from a shipping resources point of view, but at least I get what I need.

This has gotten infinitely more annoying now that I have to drive 20-30mins one way to find out they don't have what I need

It's more like their website says they sell X so I drive in and then turns out they don't. I wanna support local places but maybe the crap I do is too "specialized"

Hence why you should call ahead and confirm the website is accurate.

that's all true, but I believe that's just another byproduct of the age of online/delivery commerce. As I recall life before Al Gore invented the internet & put us on this trajectory, I never had a problem going to the store whether it was Sears, the mall, or the mom & pop shop & grabbing whatever I needed, things use to be in stock when it made sense for brick & mortar to stock everything as they were the only game in town...

If, and it's a big if, retail stores ever make a comeback it follows that the out-of-stock problem will also largely disappear.

Do you order things online because local brick and mortars don't stock it, or do they not stock it because you (and everyone else) buys everything online?

It's a real conundrum, because inventory isn't free. It makes perfect business sense to prioritize your inventory on as few of the quickest moving SKUs as you can get away with, especially if you're competing with online retailers to just keep your doors open.

It's rare I find anything in stock when it comes to car parts, but a few weeks ago I needed an intake boot for our 2008 Accord and AutoZone had one on the shelf. I never would have expected it but it made me realize that my perception of not finding stuff in stock is probably more a reflection of the vehicles I choose to drive.
