Quiet mufflers

I see the Walker quiet flow is actually 20 cents cheaper now than what I paid in 2016.

$64.79

How can anything beat that?!

Good info! Is this what you're running @toximus?

I'm assuming that when it comes to quiet mufflers it simply comes down to size and how much packing it has inside?
That's what I was running with my 4.0. With the supercharger I was not a fan of the sound (way too much rushing air sound like an air boat). With the 4.0 NA it was alright. I think the stock LJ muffler is still quieter.

I’ll be having a spintech put on my LJ in next couple weeks. I don’t expect quiet given the series I went with but are others which supposed to be quiet and at 4” x 6” x 12” I believe is smaller.

+another for the Walker Quiet Flow SS. They claim it's stainless steel inside (or maybe just the case outside?) I can't remember, but it was the quietest factory replacement that lasted the longest on my XJs. My TJ still has OEM exhaust, but once that goes I'll likely replace it with the Walker.

I would think so. I had the thrush "welded" muffler before which is essentially the same thing, but with no packing. It was a nice sound, but too loud for me. The Hush was the perfect compromise, good sound, but between 2-3k rpm all I hear is the engine whirring away like an angry massey ferguson
I run a thrush welded, I’ve had people ask what V8 I swapped in.

But to me it’s a very quiet exhaust and I prefer it that way. When on the trail I usually hear others exhausts over mine.

Any muffler shop will be able to set you up with a generic quiet muffler. Just tell them you want it to be quiet and they'll make it happen.
That actually isn't true. The space where a muffler can fit is limited to about 4" in diameter and 20" long overall which includes the bits for the exhaust pipe to attach to. If you want to get technical, you can fit a muffler that is 8" wide at one end, 4" wide at the other and the total length can not exceed 20".

My main concern is as minimal drone as possible, that while hopefully reducing sound to some degree.
That will be difficult. I had 4.0 one time and we played with different mufflers testing something for a project and the one common theme with all mufflers was unfortunately drone.

If it were me and trying to quiet the drone you should look for the biggest "quiet" muffler you can fit up in there. The longer the exhaust is in the muffler the better it can decrease the sound.

I used a DynoMax Ultra Flo. I went a little shorter than stock so the body of the muffler sets just behind the TT skid plate. It may be just slightly louder than stock, but does not "drone". I have been pretty happy with it. My TJ is loud enough I didn't need to add exhaust noise to compete with the tires, wind, stereo, wife the list goes on........

I have a welded 2 chamber muffler on my 4.0 and I would not want it any louder. I do custom pipe bending and exhaust at my shop and have found these 4.0 engines have a tendency to damage a cheap turbo style muffler from the inside out. If going with a wrapped turbo style muffler, get a good quality one, not a cheapie.

I’ll second what @Vasq recommended with the Thrush Hush. Used a few over the years on vehicles.
I put one behind a Clifford Performance header on my ‘82 CJ-7. Granted it had the 258 cu. six, close enough, but it was quiet-ish.
It definitely didn‘t sound stock. Not annoying on the trail either.

Bonus- you get another cool sticker to put on your tool box.

I'm glad to see this thread. I'm debating whether a new exhaust or rear suspension work is next in line. I hate my muffler--It is loud and drones. (Can't read the brand unless I drop the skid--that's for another time. The current muffler is about 22" long and 4" in dia. straight through.) The PO welded the entire exhaust into one piece off the exhaust manifold. Getting it on and off to do the RMS is easily the least enjoyable work I've done so far on my Jeep.

My next exhaust needs to be as quiet as possible, as rust resistant as possible, and very easy to take apart in sections.
Are multiple v-band clamps a good idea?
What version of stainless steel has the best experience (e.g., 304, 409)

All I know is that the shop in Baja made it happen for $50 out the door and it was whisper quiet.

It fell off pretty quickly but that was a rocks fault.

Love this thread! My LJ came with a Gibson and its super drone-y. So much so that I've started earing ear plugs most of the time. Excited to find some viable replacements :-)

Im running the 2 pre cats with no third cat and a spintech. It drones so loud between 2 and 3k rpms ive started keeping earplugs in the jeep.

don't get me wrong, at idle and low rpms its got a killer throaty sound to it.

wakes the whole neighborhood on start-up.

As much as i appreciate people telling me it sounds great im looking into other options for the sake of my hearing (and my kids)

I removed the “turbo” muffler the PO installed. Hated that loud drone.

I put a Walker stock replacement muffler and tail pipe on it and I like it a lot. Nice, sounds stock to me. I can hear the engine more than the exhaust.

And I got a killer deal on it from Amazon, it was a warehouse return so it was 1/2 price!
