Rattle from transmission that goes away when clutch is pushed in

#3 on the linkage section.

I bought a 03 with a 5 speed from the original owner and he just replaced the trans with a $2800 factory reman trans just before I bought it from him. He said both trans made the same noise in neutral and had the same factory lube in both trans. When I bought it from the original owner, I replaced the fluid with Red line mt90 and the noise is 75% gone! I never thought it would make that big of a difference. I would replace it with Red line and drive it.

I just got into my first Jeep (an 03 tj 4.0 5 spd 173k) and had this happen today. My stomach dropped as the feeling of impending doom crept in. This brought some relief. I’ve driven a Myriad of standard trans, from tiny cars to 18spd Eaton’s, I thought at best I had throwout bearings in the near future. This post explains the situation to a T.

It's very common you can add a little bit of Lucas oil stabilizer and put a stop to it.

The nv3550 transmission maybe more prone to it my 03 did it until I changed transmission fluid.

Nothing bad is going on.

Hey guys. I was reading this thread because I was curious if this is what everyone was hearing. Loud ticking and marble sounds.

That's a clean jeep , check your pre cat bolts, that's a pretty loud knock /rattle , not sure what's going on there .

Thanks. A lot has been replaced lol... including the entire exhaust. I can check the bolts but these two noises were coming from what sounds like the bell housing/oil pan

AndyG: My 02 Jeep Wrangler is rattling underneath in neutral when hot. Push clutch in it stops. I just had the clutch changed out. Transmission fluid is good. Will this Lucas Oil Stabalizer help me out? TY....Brian

As mentioned earlier the NV3550 are known to have noisy input shaft bearings and depressing the clutch stops the shaft from spinning and stops the noise. One of the highest rated lubricants for our Jeep transmissions is Redline MTL, most other additives are a waste.

The AX-15 has the exact same problem, my '97 TJ had the same rattle/noise from the time I drove it home brand-new from the dealership. Others assured me it was normal and that nothing was wrong.

Funny that my Ax-5 with over a 1/4 million miles has never made a sound.

Mine did it too at first, fresh fluid fixed it - seemed I tried Lucas and it helped too. 4-5 oz.

I can confirm the same here.. I had the same chatter at warm idle that went away when the clutch was depressed. Fresh fluid (based on recommendations here) and chatter is no more...

All secure here in Sector Seven. Carry on...

There’s nothing here to see people, go home.

I love it when the cops say that.
