Red clay on my engine keep it or remove it.

I bought a jeep from California that had a lot of desert sand in it and red clay on the engine and engine compartment. I live in the north east where we get snow and salt in the winter. This red stuff won't come off but I was told to leave it on as it will protect it from the snow and salt. I was wondering what you guys think it is and what to do keep it or remove it. THANKS FOR INFOMATION

Yes it should come off. It likes to stick to oily surfaces.

Not when its baked on.

The stuff out here has caliche clay sediment... not to mention the gypsum minerals.

I'd worry more about protecting the frame (inside and out) than the engine compartment now that the Jeep lives in the NE.
