Remembering Lee Iacocca

If you haven't already heard, Lee Iacocca passed away at the age of 94. As a longtime fan of the man, I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I just thought it was worth mentioning here, as if it wasn't for Lee Iacocca, who knows what would have become of the Jeep name. Iacocca bought American Motors Corporation primarily to acquire Jeep. If he had not, there's really no telling what AMC would have done. Had they folded, perhaps the Jeep name would have died with the company. Or perhaps AMC would have sold the Jeep name to a foreign company. A Korean designed Jeep, maybe? Or Volkswagen, perhaps? Who knows. All I do know is that Iacocca bought AMC for the Jeep line, and we subsequently (eventually) ended up with the TJ. For that reason alone, the man deserves to be remembered on this forum.

Jeep wouldn't have died. It's just like Gibson guitars.

Gibson has claimed bankruptcy a number of times (including just last year), has millions and millions in debt, and has gone through so many management re-organizations that I can't even keep track.

There is no possible way for them to ever go out of business, period. That name is so iconic that no matter what they owe or what happens, someone will always buy the company and keep the name alive.

I'm very confident that even if Jeep had died a short death (Indian motorcycles for example), they would somehow or another continue to be made.

It is of course a great thing that Chrysler acquired them, as I'm convinced that FCA might not survive if it wasn't for the Jeep brand (which is obviously a massive success for them).

I was sorry to hear of his passing too. Clearly though, he lived a long, fruitful life!

I finished "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?" a few months back, it's a great read. I was particularly impressed over the section that described how he told James Carville that he was not going to seek a Senate position because the talking points that were being made for him were not in line with his beliefs.
