Removing the downstream cat

If you need new catalytic converters, I recommend the Magnaflow converter assembly. They flow as good if not better than stock and aren't really any worse than a straight pipe in terms of flow.

I don't think many of you are reading the entire post. I am specifically talking about removing the "third" catalytic converter which is located closer to the transfer case. This catalytic converter does not communicate with 02 sensors the way the other two converters do. Anyways, thanks for all the feedback.

I read it.
I was having issues with my 4.0 couple years ago and finally diagnosed a clogged third cat. When I remove the complete exhaust system, I also found out that the front two cats were cleared by the previous owner.
After removing that very clogged third cat not only did my jeep run much better and I get rid of my check engine light tail. I was chasing the Jeep. Also got louder.
That said, mine runs better without the cat that I removed.
But please don’t forget as reminded above in this thread. It is a federal law you will be breaking when you remove it.

When I bought my TJ, prior owner had removed the third cat and gutted the first two. I disliked the sound and the smell. Installed all 3 new cats plus a muffler and it worked great.

Thank you for your reply, as for the Federal Law, in the bigger picture of all of the Federal/ State/ and Local fraud, waste and abuse, my catalytic converter is the least of all the worries for the federal government. They need to worry about their own departmental issues before coming after a jeep owner with one less catalytic converter. Thanks all.

The assembly comes with all three catalytic converters. The 3rd cat is bigger than factory, so flows about as well as a pipe would.

You are correct that gutting it won’t throw any codes. In terms of functionality, there aren’t any major changes other than some increased noise and increased emissions. Power output should be nearly identical.

Odds are it probably won’t get caught, but more stations are getting audited and they’re going to greater lengths to shield themselves from the liability of being caught passing a vehicle that has been tampered with. Most stations aren’t going to report you to the EPA or your state DEP but they may blacklist you as a customer.

Usually the way the audits work is they recruit people with somewhat customized cars, put an illegal mod on it, and then pay them to take it to a service station. If the station finds the problem and reports it, they pass. If they don’t report it, but don’t pass the customer and kick them out, it’s usually just a small penalty. If they outright pass the car, they often face severe civil and even criminal penalties. Usually the bust is big enough to make the local news.

The audits aren’t just for emissions but also for illegal safety modifications. I.e., tires that stick out past the fender, bumpers above/below the legal height, too much tint, Carolina squat, etc.

This guy must be in law enforcement. He is more concerned about laws than anything mentioned about Jeeps! Next!

You make your choices….you bear the consequences. Agreeing or disagreeing with the laws doesn’t matter. Only you can decide if the risk is worth it. In some states, it won’t be a big deal. In other states, it’s a huge deal. Only you can decide if the juice is worth the squeeze. Pretty sure he’s just informing you of the potential risks. If your state doesn’t do inspections (not all states do) you probably won’t have any issues.

Your call.

I’m not trying to save the environment but smelling the exhaust from a non catalytic converter engine all the time is not my idea of a good time. My Jeep got quieter and smelled nicer with the catalytic converters than without.

Like I said, read the entire post, I am not deleting my catalytic converters attached to 02 sensors in any way. I am thinking about removing the "THIRD" catalytic converter which is not attached to any 02 sensor. Therefore, my vehicle would still pass NEVADA STATE, emissions. No we do not have visual inspections like CALFIRONIA. Our process is done with OBD II plug in. Thanks for all the feedback.

Interesting! I love the smell of vehicles without cats. Every time I start up my '73 Chevy K10 the smell of the dual exhaust is awesome.

You're right though, some people don't like that smell.

You can certainly tell a well tuned non-cat engine by the smell. You can also tell a GM V8 from a Ford V8 by the sound, and even a Ford Diesel from everything else by the smell!

Yep, I agree. I'm pretty good at telling engines just from the sound. It's amazing how much different my Coyote V8 sounded in comparison to this SBC Chevy engine.

Another one that just popped into my mind: Mercedes Diesels - at least the old ones I grew up with, sounded unique with the exception of the Peugeot 504 Diesel which sounded similar/identical. Everything else was different, VWs were particularly raspy. I used to be able to tell a CAT diesel bus from anything else too, but that was a long ass time ago.

Ever hear the sound of a VW VR6 engine with an intake? That was a good sounding engine to say the least, albeit an awful, problematic, and unreliable design.

I'm "done" with VW - just like my dad was. We both owned green VWs, his was a '77 Rabbit, mine was a '96 Passat TDI. By the time those cars got through with us, we were broken men!
