My rule of thumb is to open it up and clean it up. If the bearings have worn without other attributable abnormal problems, put the same kind back in. If not, use something else.
Revolution Gear 5.38: Timken or Koyo bearings?

Sorry to resurrect an old post.
My set up bearings from a previous build are Timken. My new Revolution master kit has Koyo, is it ok to use my set up bearings and instal Koyo’s as final, or stick with the same brand.
I would automatically say no, either do some Koyo set up bearings or get some Timken bearings for the build.
Has anyone used one brand for set up but another for final instal and have first hand experience?

I've done it and Koyo and Timken are all but identical. With that being said, I've used Timken as setup and Timken as final and have still seen changes between the two. Most likely you will be close enough to call it good. YMMV!

My recent experience with Timken was literally disastrous, and I personally won't be using them again.
I just had my rear axle rebuilt with Revolution Gears & Full Timken bearings hub to hub. (1/14/2024)
Blew a rear bearing within 80 miles of pulling it out of the shop.
Reinstalled with Koyo, and have been problem free for the past 4-5 days.
On one of my threads last week, someone mentioned that Timken might have moved overseas for manufacturing.
My recent experience with Timken was literally disastrous, and I personally won't be using them again.
