I have an 04 lj and the other day I was looking to remove the little rocker panel trim piece underneath the Jeep logo on the sides just below the door hinges. It’s about a foot long and looks to serve no purpose. After I managed to take one off I noticed a hole covered by a plastic membrane. Does anyone know what the purpose of this hole is? Also is the only way to cover this up by buying rocker guards?

The foot long plastic piece other than looking out of place visually; I believe it is supposed to stop mud and water from being flung up onto the door and into an open window.
When I removed the plastic rocker guards to apply new double sided tape I noticed the holes from the plastic mounting point; I just covered them over with the plastic rocker guards and didn't give them another thought.
I also noticed my '01 Sport 4.0L previously had side steps at one time evidenced by the (4) nutserts on both the D/P side frame rails.
That little plastic trim piece covers the hole nicely, I'd say that's a good purpose. It also keeps your tires from throwing mud on the doors. Drive your Jeep in the mud or rain once without those trim pieces and you'll get the picture. The hole was used when they put your Jeep together. The easiest way to cover it would be simply to paint that plastic crap to match your body I guess. Rocker guards will obviously work too.
