Routine maintenance before installing swapped axles?

I bought a pair of complete axles (Dana 30/Dana 35 super; both with new chromoly shafts and locker (35) /LSD (30)) from a forum member who has written up their rig on this sight. Our vehicles are only a year apart and should be a straight swap. He had the axles built only a couple of years ago (at a local shop). I am in no way questioning the integrity of the previous owner.

My question is, since they're out from under the rig, is there some maintenance that I should do now while I've got them out before I swap them?

All I'd do is change the gear lube. Run a conventional GL-5 like a 75W-9, or something heavier like an 80W-120 if you tow or plan to do really tough trails. Gears run hotter when lubed with a synthetic gear lube.
