Curiosity.

119k miles on my 2003. I changed the front diff oil today and noticed gear setup paint (yellow). I've put about 6k miles on it since I bought it a few years ago. Oil was perfectly clean, clear - looked like new.

Did they come from the factory with gear pattern paint, or was this a sign that the gears have been replaced at some time? There was a little smeared on the locker housing, and some on the edge of the ring gear. They are still 4:10 - everything inside looks very clean.

Thanks!

The factory gears are typically already worked/pre-matched together by Dana-Spicer before being installed. That means they don't have to be set up on the factory floor, they're already broken in and ready to be driven on. Which is why we don't have to break them in when we buy a new Jeep or car.

For that reason I doubt your gears are what the factory originally installed.

I guess a lot can happen in 17 years of a Jeeps life. Hopefully nothing to worry about in there! No noises, nothing odd in the few years I've owned it. Lockers work every time, etc.. Not going to worry about it!
