Rust Treatment & Prevention

So I have some rust forming on the doors hinges of my Jeep. I have also noticed other places forming as well, side of the tub where rocks and such have kicked up from the tires.

I have also noticed a couple places on the frame, which is just surface rust.

Since I do plan on keeping the jeep for as long as possible, I should probably start treating the rust now, before it gets worse.

I have seen products from Eastwood and Por-15. My question is, what have you guys done?

Is this something that I can just spray my door hinges with and it will take care of the rust for me?

I'm new at rust, so I'm ready to learn!

I've been using Fluid Film and burnt Linseed oil with great long lasting results.

The one advantage with the Linseed oil is it can be sprayed on with a garden sprayer once thinned with mineral spirits, makes for a quick and efficient job.

I have used Rustoleum, more for treatment of individual parts, works fine, here's an old Army Corps of Engineers sign I found...

the bottom half was treated overnight

I will be cleaning up some rust today, although my sections aren’t anything like what you are after.

The only way I've found to TRULY get rid of rust, is to completely remove it...Either cut it out, or use some other method to get it back to raw steel. Otherwise, I'm trying to encapsulate rust, theoretically, that will work, but its tough to pull it off.

Well for the door hinges, I’m going to attempt to take them off without screwing up the screws. Take them to work, and sand blast them.

See what happens.

Your touch-up paint will not last. Better off buying new sets of hinges.

Really?

Yes because the pins are under stressed (by friction) all the time (doors open/close all the time) and that the painted edge rim spot will grind peel that will flake out the new paint. The rust will creep back in.
