Serpentine replacement led to overheating

I strongly suspect his first attempt at the belt install was routed incorrectly and spun the water pump the wrong direction. Its all downhill from there.

I hope I'm not insulting anybody, but I would think it takes a special flavor of clueless to not notice that the ribbed side of the belt was against the flat pulley, or not realize that flat pulleys gets the flat side of the belt, grooved pulleys get the ribbed side.

Since there is on board air via a York compressor I wanted to be safe and made a diagram to make sure I’d get it back on correctly. Might not be proportionally right, but the parts and routing is.

Last time I had my belt off I tried putting it back on from memory. Instead of running the belt from 5-6-4-3 I ran it 5-4-6-3. Everything spins the right direction and it was tight enough that the tensioner didn't fully extend but I could spin the water pump pulley by hand against the belt so I knew something wasn't right. I started it anyway and immediately turned it off because the belt was squealing like a banshee. My decal is gone so I brought it up in the FSM and corrected it.

Because some idiot at Jeep thought it would be smart to put the routing decal on the plastic rad tank that blows, I saved a pic of the routing to my phone so that I wouldn't have to look it up when needed.

oh great. The easiest installs sometimes become the longest projects
My experience of installing 1000’s of serpentine belts is to check the number of ribs on the belt first to verify you have the right one and try to check the length vs the old one. I have seen many belts in the wrong sleeve from people checking multiple belts on the counter and mixing up the sleeves before putting them back. You can check the number to verify also. Then after installing the belt before starting the vehicle check the belt position on every pulley from where it first contacts the pulley to where it exits the pulley. It can be very easy to get one rib hanging off a pulley. Also draw a diagram before you take the old one off. The Jeeps are not so hard to check vs a lot of front wheel drive vehicles.
