So an acquaintance of mine whose TJ was totaled gave me a few things from it, including a KN cold air intake. I’ve heard conflicting opinions about them, and wouldn’t have bought one myself, but I’m wondering if it would be worth installing considering I already have it.
Should I install a K&N cold air intake?

IIUC the OE airbox has to be replaced if you go with highlines. What's the preferred set up the? Some form of cowl set up?
I personally like induction noise but K&N filters do suck. And you're not going to get a performance benefit, not any measurable amount, anyway. If you want to use the tube and stuff for a bit more chuff and since you have it anyway, you can run something cleanable and oil-less like an AEM dry flow filter. That's what I have on my supercharger, with a filter sock over that.
No measurable power gain, although your butt will insist it's got more power, because butt dynos always read high. And more dirt going through your engine. No, I wouldn't install one if it was given to me.

"Cold air intake" is quite the euphemism. One that I wish would go away...forever 
I personally wouldn't install one, especially if you like to go off-roading. If you're just driving it on the street then sure.

If you want better performance, just put the K&N sticker on your window instead.
Or play with your air pressure...or get better tires...or replace stuff with aluminum and drop your Jeep weight by a few hundred pounds.

My TJ came with a K&N Cone+CAI which was oxymoronic to me because although it “sounded” interesting, there didn’t seem to be any real gains, I don’t drive my TJ like a sports car and the intake was in the engine bay which is full of “hot” air. All it did was get the cone filter dirty and make me concerned about any future fording I may have to do. Needless to say, after the few months of interesting sounds with zero gains, I found a stock air box and picked up a standard filter and the jeep is happy and so am I. To each his own though.
I can fix that. It isn't fun, it isn't cheap, but it does fit and actually does pull in less warm air.
