Skid plate area frame rust

Hi Guys, and ladies. my search for a TJ continues. wondering if anyone ever had this part of frame fixed. if anyone had the sort of work done, any ball park figure for a repair? thanks

You MUST use an impact wrench it will not strip the nut.

Hate to necropost, but I'm having this same issue with my frame(not nearly this bad. The 2 out of the 3 bolts on the passenger side of the skid plate currently don't torque down due to rust.

I have an appointment to have my mechanic patch it up next Weds, will it be ok until then? Does my auto trans rest on the skid plate using it as a support? Like I said, all the bolts on the driversside are fine, and the 1 bolt on the passenger side torques down nice and tight.

What has happened is your frame has rusted internally so much that the welded on nuts on the inside have broken free. This is not great news for you, but its also not the end of the world. Unfortunately it means if you really want it fixed correctly it will cost some money, as you will most likely have to replace the center frame section. Those welded nuts breaking free are an indication of much worse internal frame rust or rot. Just be prepared that they may say you have to replace that frame section.

You should be ok driving it still in the meantime. You'll probably get some vibrations though from the plate rattling since it cannot be tightened down all the way. You may want to get a mega zip tie or something and you can make it so it doesn't vibrate and sound obnoxious.

I was thinking zip ties too, what's the best way to get a snug fit with them?

When I did it to mine (very similar situation) I used a jack to push up the skid as much as possible then just snugged up the zip best I could. At ACE Hardware I found zip-ties that were mil-spec and were rated to 250lbs. Worked really good.

They don't depreciate.... makes it harder to buy but comes back when you sell. One of the best auto investments out there.

Used the ziptie suggestion given to me on here; definitely closed the gap between the frame and the skidplate. Seems much more secure than it did when it was just being held on on this side with one bolt.
