Ok, I'm not trying to say which winch is better or anything like that...…… If you are looking at the Smittybilt x20 winch 10K with synthetic rope then 4wd.com has the same winch with the Trail Master brand and no logo for $484 ($599 for Smittybilt logo on). They are having a 10% off for valentines day that came in an email. This morning they said they don't have it so they are shipping me the Smittybilt 10k with synthetic rope for $436 +/-. I price shop stuff too much and just wanted to pass it along. They may have 1 or more models, but I dont' know. Later MOE

Nice find! That is indeed an awesome deal! And yes, it's the same winch as the Smittybilt X20 (same winch I have), just without the name.

Do you know the coupon code for the 10% off?
Also, did you call or order online?
 
r*GM86HW is the code they sent me in the email. Yesterday it worked when I put it in and today in didn't so I called them and they gave me the discount and I ordered it over the phone. MOE
 
@mopar_tx thanks for the heads up! Just ordered it through the phone. $462 after tax. Free shipping. They said if you ordered the trail master online it would be backordered so if you want the smittybilt x20 you have to call and order the trail master one.

I honestly hate to even bring my opinion up on this but I wouldn't mount a Smittybilt or Harbor Freight Tools winch on my TJ if my Warn were to burn up tomorrow and someone gave me one. Honestly. I want a winch I know I'll be able to get replacement parts for 20 years from now and those winches aren't it.

There was a recent post where someone explained that line of reasoning very well. He bought a Smittybilt winch and while it was still covered by its warranty its solenoid pack went out and the winch stopped working. Smittybilt couldn't provide a replacement solenoid pack. What? Smittybilt ended up giving him a replacement winch. Sounds great, right? Until you realize they won't do that once its warranty runs out. Then when it has another problem you might as well unspool its rope, tie the end of it to your boat and use the winch as a boat anchor.

I don't mean to hurt the feelings of those who love their Smittybilt, Harbor Freight, etc. winches but this is a long-term opinion I developed over the years of hearing/reading too many horror stories on going the inexpensive route when it comes to important key components of our Jeeps. A winch is not like a tire deflation tool or seats... when you need a winch, you need it to work. It's one of those things that just might be needed to get you home or back to camp that night.

If all you want is jewelry for the front bumper, have at 'er. But if you might be trying to scramble up a river bank during a cloud burst.... hoping to avoid the flash flood.... I'd pay for the Warn Winch everytime. Most guys who say I love my Shitty Bilt qualify that with
"I've used it a couple of times."

Extreme Terrain has the 10K Engo Winch with synthetic for basically the same price With the Brand decal.
 
Actually amazon has them for $299 as well and the6 have 9500 tiger shark synthetic for just under $500.

Is the synthetic line that much better? I know it’s lighter and safer, but does it hold up that much better long term.

+1 Jerry!!! I purchased that KD Fabworks front bumper and now need a winch. I figured Presidents Day weekend may have a few sales pop up, but in no way would I put a smittybilt anything on the Jeep.

Been reading up on the Warn M8000 as that seems to be the favorite by a lot of people. Now if I can find it for the right price.

I believe it’s biggest pros are safer and lighter but still needs maintenance and may need to be replaced down the line with wear and tear.

What are your thoughts on the Warn VR line which is the cheaper line of warn winches but from what I understand made in China?
 
My previous TJ had a Superwinch that I loved. I ran it for over 8 years without issue and unfortunately the jeeps home was outside in the New England weather, salt and brine.

My new rig has a Smittybuilt that only winds in and I dont really trust it like I did the Superwinch.

My synthetic line has held up better than my wire ropes did. Wire ropes can kink and break strands if used multiple times in a day without being rewound after each use. I was ready to replace my second wire rope due to damage when I switched to synthetic.
