My daughter, Luci has a ‘95 YJ with the 2.5 and AX5. With 33 inch tires what gears should we run? I don’t see this in the charts.
TIA

Brian

Anything below 4.88 I'd fear you'd feel like you wasted your money. You're already at 4.10. I second 4.88.

Chris also created a YJ forum as well.

Factory 4:10 correct. It’s fine around town but no go for the big merge. But I’m concerned 4:88 isn’t enough? Anyone with any actual experience?

I have a 4 banger TJ too. I wouldn't put 5.13's on the highway with 33's. Going 70, you're at 3200 which is a bit much. You're at 3000 on the dot with 4.88 gears.

I had a 4 popper & 33" tires when I first got my TJ. At the time 4.88 gears were the deepest you could get for the Dana 35 & Dana 30. And while they were OK and I could use 5th gear again IMO I wished I had a little more.

4.88 gears put you @ 3030 RPM's doing 70 MPH
5.13 gears put you @ 3185 RPM's doing 70 MPH

This is with a guess at the tire being 32.2" for a 33" tire.

I went to 35" tires and lost use of 5th gear again. Did the V-8 swap and have 5.13 gears in the axles I run with it too.

Keep in mind a YJ doesn’t need to cruise more than 65 often anyway. She does drive it to work over the mountain daily tho so i was thinking of gears. It seems the 4:88 may be better especially if there’s no plan for 35’s.

Thanks again all

Now you know the overdrive gear and can make informed comparisons to TJs with the 2.5.

This is where my ignorance comes into play. I’ve been trying to read and understand all this gear ratio stuff but I get lost and I’m not sure why.
Example y’all tell me 5:38 w my 42rle and 35’s but friend Dave has same setup with 4:88’s and screams at 3500 rpm’s at under 70.
Something is wrong and I’m just trying to make sense of it. 😋

Sure he has a 42RLE?
