Spare tire rubber bumpers

So going from 30.5 to 33" tires, I had to remove the bumpers to mount the spare. Has anyone just cut down the stock bumpers to make it work, are they really necessary?

You should get the proper mount due to the extra weight. You could end up with door issues.

Can you explain a little bit more on the proper mount, where do I purchase, or are you talking about a swing away system?

The OE spare tire bracket is not strong enough to support a 33x12.50 spare tire. Mine cracked & failed after bolting a 33" spare to it. The only way I'd do that would be after welding or bolting a support of some type to the bumper that the tire can rest on to take the weight of the spare tire off the carrier.

Kind of like in the below photo but there are far simpler ways to do it. I need to take a photo of how @mrblaine did it for his wife's Jeep next time I'm at his house.

I swing away system would be ideal but they are expensive. They have mount extensions so u can get the lugs back on

I've yet to see an inexpensive spare tire carrier hold up for long.

Take a look at this Smittybilt spare tire carrier. It failed where it was welded to the bumper and it fell off. You can see the hole in the bumper and the thin steel it was welded to. Typical Smittybilt.

That bracket doesn't take the weight of the spare tire off the tailgate and hinges. That's a poor design as it will fool some people into thinking it will hold up long-term, it won't since the tailgate and its hinge/latching mechanism wasn't designed to hold the weight of a 33" or bigger spare.

The bumpers are necessary to distribute the load. There is a thread floating around where @mrblaine explained it all and how his wife ran a 33 or 35 on the stock carrier without issue. The other option over a full swing out set up is the Exogate which reinforces the stock position.
