So I changed to 5:13 gears and love them ! So anyone out their on the fence it’s been great for me on my 33’s and it feels like it’s got the stock 3:73 gears again and can pull my camper and have power again . I put in the new speedometer gear so my speedometer would be accurate and it worked great for a month and now nothing, no cruise no speedometer. Any suggestions ? Thanks , Kurt

My bet is you didn't rotate the speedometer housing correctly to get the new speedometer gear to properly mesh with the pinion gear underneath. It doesn't go back in the same position it was with the original different diameter speedometer gear. This website talks about that... http://www.4x4xplor.com/speedo.html

I have 33in tires on my stock geared 2005 TJ. What gear should I purchase?
Hi,

What gears really depends on how you plan to use your TJ.

There are so many upgrades you can do before tackling gears. I have owned my LJ for 3 plus years using it as is and learning about what I like about the LJ and what I want to improve to fit my needs.

There are many threads about gearing, axels drive shaft lines in the forum. Welcome and check it all out.

I have 3:73 gears
For 33's and 3.73 you want a 31 tooth gear. http://www.4x4xplor.com/speedo.html

Make sure you rotate the speedometer gear housing as instructed in the above link. If the speedometer doesn't work after you reinstall it you likely didn't get it rotated properly.

Also be careful with the o-ring on the speedometer gear housing. If it gets nicked you'll have an ATF leak from there.

I just measured my tires and they are under 32" The tires do say 33x12.5x15...

Just received it and installed it... Took literally less than 5 minutes to install too. Going for a test drive now. I hope it works!!!
