Hello, I have a 2003 tj, manual 4.0 L

It went through a full body off restoration. I have been working through the hiccups associated with that type of project.

It's finally gotten to the point that it's ready to enjoy. The last time I picked it up from my mechanic everything was going great for about 45 minutes then it just quit !

All the dash lights worked, it would turn over, my mechanic confirmed it was getting gas, but would not fire. After a rest period, about 10-15 minutes it cranked up.

It ran for about 10 minutes and died again. After a longer rest, probably 30 minutes it again started and we were able to drive it the 10 miles back to the shop. I had this problem previously, and replaced the ECM and thought it fixed it because the ECM gets so hot you can't touch it when this happens.

I called Mark @Wranglerfix to see if he could help me. After discussing the situation we don't think the problem can be the ECM as it did the same thing with both of them.........................

My mechanic said it could be the TIPM, however Mark told me that this year doesn't have one.

I don't believe we are getting any codes except the one pertaining to the unconnected evap canister in the passenger rear fender well that was broken during the replacement of the fuel pump and no one has figured out how to repair/replace it.

Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

First time on a forum, not really sure how it works.

Since you've already replaced the ECM and it didn't solve the issue, it's unlikely to be the cause as Mark mentioned.

There could be a few potential culprits. One possibility is a fuel delivery problem. Your mechanic confirmed that the vehicle is getting gas, but there could be an issue with the fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel injectors. It might be worth checking the fuel pressure to ensure it's within the factory specs.

Another possibility could be an ignition problem. If the engine isn't firing consistently, it could be due to a faulty ignition coil, distributor, or spark plugs. Inspecting and possibly replacing these components might help eliminate this as a potential cause.

In addition, electrical issues could also lead to intermittent stalling. While you mentioned that the dash lights are working, it's worth checking all the connections and wiring to ensure everything is clean and secure.

Finally, if you still can't figure it out you need to find someone (or purchase) a scanner that can read live data. Being able to read live data and see what the engine / computer is doing in real time is going to be the easiest and least frustrating way to solve your issue.
