I feel really stupid asking this but... I am installing new ZJ steering parts and have a new drag link. While removing the old linkage, I found the tapered bolt for the steering damper is damaged, so I need to replace it.

Is there anywhere to purchase a new tapered bolt? I do not need a new steering damper, just the mounting hardware. I have searched and am having a hard time finding what I need.

Thanks guys
Erik

I’d by a cheap one and scavenge the hardware and shelve the damper...the hardware alone would be high from a specialty seller.

The OEM parts list doc for mine doesn't show the tapered bolt as an individually purchasable item. I suspect you'd pay almost the same for such specialty hardware as a new steering stabilizer if you could even get it. The Monroe unit is $30 on amazon.

The tapered stud won't come out of the OE stabilizer, it's a permanently attached part. He needs to find a tapered stud meant for that use.

Buy a steering stabilizer kit like Rancho's which includes the required tapered stud.

For reference the hardware supplied with the Monroe stabilizer was a pretty poor fit with the Moog drag link. On mine it didn't end up seating all the way down into the tapered hole. It works fine but I would have preferred a better fit. If I was going to do it over, I'd buy the rancho stabilizer like @Jerry Bransford mentions in the post above.

Ive got a few hardware kits in my bolt bin but its probably faster and smarter to just buy a new stabilizer that comes with the hardware.

I've got the same parts: Monroe stabilizer and Moog drag link, and everything fit great. The tapered bolt went in just as it should. I'd wonder if you got a poorly manufactured unit or some nonsense.

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the input!

Well that explains a lot! LOL

I appreciate that, ordered one today!

Here is what mine looks like. I expected the tapered shaft to fully seat in the drag link but there is a little bit of a gap. The cotter pin went in fine and it is tightened to spec. However, as you can probably tell from the pic, the steering stabilizer is a little bit out of perpendicular with the bolt.

I just did mine with a Moog TJ draglink and Monroe steering stabilizer. Same issue as you. The taper sticking up doesn't bother me but I don't like how the bolt is cockeyed in the bushing. Also I had to drill out the cotter pin hole a little bit, it wasn't right from the factory.
