Hello there,

I have done a handful of repairs on my 1999 TJ but I am working on the transfer case for the first time. For some context, previous owner did a 4” lift but left the OEM transfer case linkage on. Needless to say, the first time I took off the transmission skid plate, it popped off. I purchased a Steinjager wire transfer kit instead. I have been working on installing it, but ran into several hiccups related to seized bolts on the transfer case bracket. I did a fair amount of pushing and pulling and beating trying to get the OEM case off.

I installed the new wire transfer case linkage in 4L as recommended by Steinjager. I can get it to N and 4H but nothing I do is getting me back to 2H. I have tried adjusting the linkage, using a wrench at the selector shaft to manually turn it. I know for sure I messed up the first time I put the new transfer case lever on and over tightened so I have backed that off and repositioned it and attempted to move it forward with that. Nothing is working. I read here to try to back it up 15-20 feet in 4H, pop it in neutral, and try to shift down to 2H from there… nothing.

What are yall thinking I can do next? Is it time to open the case?

Also- what are your experiences with Steinjager? Have you encountered the kit being a little too short to do a full range of motion? Or is it just user error? Because I also ran into that.

Thanks,
Megan

Maybe this helps?

That did help! I am now seeing that I installed the transfer case lever upside down 🙃 so looks like I need to remove front drive shaft at the yoke. However, I’m still concerned because I can’t even manually shift it into 2H when I take the lever off and try to shift just from the selector shaft… although if I had the lever backwards, maybe Im in 4L when I think I’m in 4H… I’ll take a look!
