The good news thread

I grew up in the Chain O' Lakes region of SE WI and NE IL. Hockey was a big deal on the lakes every winter, tho I never played. I'd rather been on a sled at 70 miles an hour across the lakes. I also never had a decent pair of skates so I sucked at self propelled motion on ice. We got into hockey after our youngest married her hubs. He eats and breathes hockey. He took us to some USHL and AHL games. We were hooked. Eli prefers soccer, which I played a bit in high school, but I preferred real football, the kind where you use your hands. ;) Owen will do both soccer and hockey.

Also happens to be my favorite sport lol
"Hockey. A fight where a game may break out." ;)

Mine as well.

Not so much in that anymore. The game has changed quite a bit over the last few decades. Lots of speed and skill now, the fighting seems to have moved back to its proper place in the sport...which is a good thing for the longevity of the game/sport. I know many like the "Probert-era" hockey, it was interesting for sure, but I'd rather watch amazing passing and incredible goals, with a good punch up mixed in when needed. If a player takes liberties...they all know the price. 👊

I'm sure you've seen matt rempe? New york rangers #73, he's a true Alberta farm boy (23, 6' 9" 260 lbs lol) and a very entertaining fighter to watch:

No sir, I just grew up in Calgary, Canada.

Proud of my daughter: She’s 14 and since she was little(er) has wanted to be a Marine Biologist. For the past year she’s been building out her fish tanks and learning why we support local businesses instead of “just ordering from Amazon”. After almost weekly visits, many emails, building a relationship with the owners of our local Aquatics store, and asking for a job almost every visit, they finally relented and offered her an internship.

She’s too young to be paid formally, but lots of life lessons in working for a small business, including scrubbing algae off the back tanks for two hours, and that if you work for good people, your hard work is usually rewarded. She got an array of new fish comped by the owners since she’d worked for it and hopefully this is the start of a long term relationship.

Sometimes I have hope in humanity.

Kudos for impressing a work ethic at the appropriate age. Old school!

Please don't take this the wrong way - but from someone who worked in the marine sciences, there are 10,000 Marine Biologists for every 500 Marine Biologist jobs. That is, I'm afraid, the hard truth. If she is serious about it, understand that she will have to be the absolute top of the top to get a job and she still might not be able to...

I have a buddy with a degree in Marine Biology.

So what does he do?

Project Management.

I hear ya. She’s in 8th grade, I’ll wait till High School before we have the conversation about dreams v reality. For now I’m happy she’s interested in a science, working, and the owners didn’t have piles (or any) paperwork I had to sign.

A friend of mine went to college for marine biology.

He became a funeral home owner and he owns a monument company.

Almost as good as underwater basket weaving........ View attachment 670807

Hey, my youngest brother got a similar degree - underwater welding and construction. Never worked a day in that field. He found out most of the work is union, and you have to work as a tender for years at a very low wage before you actually get to go in the water and make the big bucks. He worked as a PM for a home contractor (work similar to what AndyG's biz does) for a few decades, then switched to being a PM for residential solar installations, and finally where he is now - a PM for industrial green energy projects (very large solar and battery array systems). He eventually found a great career path, but it was a rough start for him when he graduated with that degree. Important point - like red02tj's daughter, his parents taught him the importance of work ethics, so he always excelled in productivity over his peers, and that was how he "made his own luck."

Friend of mine was an underwater welder for 6 months, his wife wouldn't live in Louisiana and came home while he was out on the rig.

She didn't care he made more in 6 months on the rig than he could at home.

This was years ago.

How 'bout NYC - would she have liked living in that craphole? My brother headed there because he'd heard that it was where the highest demand for workers was. Hence all the jobs being union. The only thing that remains from his foray into that industry is that he stayed in that area because he met a Connecticut girl and married her. He was out of work for a few months about a decade ago, and I told him I could get him a job as a PM in either civil construction or home construction through my networking, and we were both excited about the possibility of being close to one another again - until his wife said, "I'm a Connecticut girl, not a Texas girl." 😬

Over 50 years on this planet and I still do not see the attraction to this place in any way.

As a country-boy, I agree. My skin starts to crawl as I get close to any population center. I lived in CT near my brother for a couple years a quarter century ago and made it to NYC once, and that was enough for me. We were supposed to spend the day there. I made it 45 minutes and said, "I need to go - NOW!" Yuck! My wife is like minded, so she wasn't upset. My brother knows me well, so he just laughed. My sister-in-law, well, she's well-practiced at giving a cold shoulder...

I know you are from Maryland, but I don't see the attraction to anything north of Tennessee, I have lived in Virginia and Indiana and have no desire to go back to either of them.

I'm pretty happy right where I am, very few leftist, and a handshake is all most deals take.

Where i live even most Democrats (there are only 4 total in my little district) are gun nuts and conservative.

Can't see moving off this mountain.

This reminds me of an experience years ago in Denver CO . We went to the 16 st. mall to go to a specialty hat store , I got a Bowler for my daughters wedding .
I felt increasingly uncomfortable , something wasn't right and my head was on a swivel , I told my wife we were leaving right now . Of course as things go she was wearing some shoes that were hurting her feet and didn't want to walk fast . She believed my about the urgency , and I pulled and carried her quickly back to the Jeep .
A few days later we saw a story about a meth fueled idiot beating people with a 6 foot long piece of 2" pvc pipe on the Mall. Screw Denver .
