Just installed a new timing chain/ gear set in the 4.0 I’m rebuilding and the timing chain seems tight. I turned the crank over till the timing marks lined back up and it’s the same, 5-6mm of play on each side(?).

I have to imagine it gives a tolerance for the timing chain tension.

Damn... well I know on all the motorcycles I've owned it was generally 1" of slack in either direction... however, that's a motorcycle chain.
Someone who has rebuilt one of these will chime in shortly I'm sure.
Motorcycles have tensioners, at least everyone I’ve worked on. Long cam chains are usually in OHC engines necessitating tensioners. The 4.0 has a very short timing chain, I don’t think it could be much shorter.
The 4.0 doesn't even have a tensioner does it? I remember putting on the gears and chain and there was not really any slack at all, just that 1/4 inch or so like the OP describes.
Double check your part numbers for peace of mind. The 2.5 chain is a different part number - not sure if different length.

That’s what I have is 1/4” slack, it just seemed tight and I was looking for confirmation that that (1/4”) was normal. Thank you for helping me to clear this up.
And you are correct, no tensioner in the 4.0.
