According to a plausible-sounding theory in a thread on one of those other forums, it has to do with the chain sprocket bearings. An older 231 apparently has needle bearings for the sprocket, minimizing long-term wear due to the fr/rr shafts spinning at vastly different speeds, i.e rear shaft spinning, front shaft not spinning. Probably similar in any t-case intended for use with locking hubs or front axle disconnect. Newer 231s, 241s, etc, apparently don't have the needle bearings, only a "surface" bearing, as the two shafts spin at approximately the same speed most of the time, therefore little long-term wear.
I've never been inside a t-case, so can't vouch for or against this theory
