Transfer care woes + post V8 magnum swap shake-down issues

Case looks fine. Everything else inside is replaceable. How's the plantary in the front half?

What do you think happened?

Lots of metal shavings on the magnet. All you can do is put it back together and try shifting it through each position to make sure it's functioning properly. Make sure it goes into each position like it's supposed to. Clean up the inside really well before you put it back together.

Did you take apart the small circle bearing retainer on the front of the case?

Wondering if you did what I did and forgot that snap ring.

Hard to tell with your video. Tripods...they exist. =)

Yeah I suck at taking videos. I pushed in and out the snout and it firmly in place. The large snap ring was loose yet I have no idea how that would happen.

Right now i am contemplating this, but it’s quite the purchase.

Of note the oil was pretty burnt looking.

I can usually find them on FB marketplace for anywhere from $100 to $600.

Before I spent that money I'd buy a single speed Atlas or Behemoth.

Problem with used cases is most of them are out of Cherokees. Insofar that's not a problem but can take a lot of looking to find the right case.

I’ve rebuilt chain cases a few times. It’s pretty straightforward. They are easy to find on the used market too.

I’ve had better luck with gear cases though. I have a healthy V8 running through a Dana 20 with 37s and haven’t had any issues. It wasn’t cheap to build unfortunately.

Those JB Conversion units look freaking sweet.

I don't like the sound of the burnt oil... The pump pickup tube & filter can be a PITA to get back into place properly. I had to rebuild one on a buddies TJ after he'd bought it and the case was ruined.

Take your time putting it back together and make sure you do a function check on it before reinstalling it.

I plan on tearing into it further today. I am bothered by not finding the smoking gun of what I did wrong. There is no way that snap ring was loose and i actually took a 1k round trip last month and she did fine.

I am trying to keep the same length, just bought the Tom Wood's rear drive shaft and trying to avoid having to switch that out with all the other upgrades I need to do. Don't know much about transfer cases. This is only my 2nd time messing around with them, so I wouldn't even know what to look for in terms of what makes gears stronger/better than a chain.

Emailed JB, and John called me back. They are working with me to get me a whole unit. If I send back my unit, they will work with me and give me some credits based on what they can reuse. Pretty happy with that response, and I am good with going this way and seeing how it goes.

Good luck, hope you get it fixed soon. I've had good luck with them also but it was years ago for me..

Closing the loop.. John at JB conversions got my new transfer just in time for the event I was trying to make. No off roading yet but the new case was pristine and drop in ready.
