Transmission question

I have a 2000 Sahara 6 cyl automatic that when I put it in reverse in the morning backing out of my garage it starts sputtering and almost dies, then when I shift into drive it works fine and the rest of the day it runs like normal. Does anyone have any suggestions what this could be, the transmission fluid level is fine by the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess would be engine related and not transmission related at all

How long do you let it idle for before going into reverse? I wonder if the torque converter is draining back overnight and you try to put it in gear before it's recharged. I believe the 42RLE will charge the TC even in park (as compared to the 32RH, which will not). I might let it idle longer in NEUTRAL to allow the TC extra time to charge and see if that changes anything.

EDIT: I'm dumb, I read that you had a 2006. You have a 32RH.

Check the transmission fluid level while the Jeep is running and in neutral.

Might be low on fluid.

Might need to adjust the TV cable.

Are you checking the ATF level in the transmission while the engine is running and the transmission is in Neutral?

As yall can tell I’m not mechanically inclined. I’ll try letting it warm up longer and I checked the transmission fluid while the engine wasn’t running so I’ll check it when it’s running next time. Thanks for the info!
