I'm sorry but in no where there does it say to ignore airport TSA officers and make a scene.

And that's why this is sort of a hard story to take sides on.

You feel bad for the guy, but at the same time, rules are rules. If the police come to remove me from my car, an airplane, or anywhere for that matter, you better bet that I'm going to do as I'm told.

Fighting with law enforcement only creates more problems. So while United handled this poorly, the way that guy behaved is unacceptable IMHO.

You can only 'bump' prior to boarding. Read further. Airlines cannot 'bump' a passenger that has been allowed to board and is seated. Big difference.

True, but officers can and do cross lines. They effectively enforced "bumping" a passenger which is a civil matter. They had no business getting involves...which is why they were put on Administrative Leave. Follow the facts. Follow the law. Know your rights.

You are correct. He refused to leave as his attorney via cell told him the "law" said UA could not remove him once seated. This was a civil matter, not criminal. Therefore the police had no right to act as enforcers for UA.

Example: You pay your landlord April's rent. He claims you didn't and orders you to vacate your apartment. You refuse. Landlord calls the police and tells them he owns the building and wants them to forcibly remove you and your stuff. You show the police that you have a lease, you did not break in. The police will tell the landlord that it is a civil matter and he will have to legally evict you... then they will leave.

Unless the passenger presented a danger or broke a law, the airport police should have done the same thing and left it to United and the passenger to work out. Which is why these officers are now on leave.

You guys definitely know more about the whole situation than I do, that's for sure. I didn't read that much into it, I only know the little that I saw.

Like I said, he get's millions from this, so in the end, even with as much as he went through, he'll be a happy guy.

If all of this is true, he deserves to get his money, and United deserves to be shamed.

Of course, good luck to all these people saying they'll boycott United. United owns a huge amount of the airline industry.

Tip of the day: If you are told "your seat will be assigned at the gate " when booking a ticket, your flight is close to sold out and you will be among the most vulnerable to be bumped. I never fly without a seat assignment; I always select a different flight.

Opportunity? Tonight's news stated a family last week agreed to be bumped and rebumped and rebumped from NYC to MIA. They collected over $11,000 in cash and AMX gift cards. So if you have a flexible schedule, volunteering can be profitable. (I had a friend who always volunteered anyway just in case. He usually flew for free.)

Update from news conference:

Dr. Dao is a 69 year old surgeon. He received a serious concussion, broken nose, and they knocked out two front teeth. He did not fight back. He had not been drinking or doung drugs. No injuries to officers. He simply resisted being illegally removed.

3 officers needed to beat the hell out of him? In whose world is this OK? What if it was your father, your mother, or your wife?

I saw them dragging an adult (soon to be rich-er) infant laying in the floor kicking and screaming like a 2 year old.
Pretty sure his "injuries" were self inflicted, regardless of his attorney making the "injury" claims and inflating the settlement

That being said,
This is why you should drive anywhere you reasonably can. I haven't been on a plane since 2007 because I got REALLY tired forking over fat bucks so i could be treated like s*** and lied to by anyone remotely connected to an airport.

Maybe next time he should bring his "comfort pig" and they'd let 'em both fly.

I have filed this whole mess under my personal assessment of what happens when stupid meets stupid in the employ of stupid. If any of my relatives acted like that when asked to get off a plane and got their ass beat for it, I'd laugh at them and ask them how they liked getting their ass beat for being a moron. If the cops were my relatives, I'd ask them how they liked sitting home for acting like morons. If the CEO was a relative, I'd ask him how he liked his new larger asshole for the money he has to pay for being a moron.

There were no adults in play here, just a bunch of stupid folks acting like children and I hope all of them enjoy the pain their actions caused them.

BTW- resistance is fighting back. Had he got up and walked of the plane under his own power, none of this would have happened. I'm not saying anyone is in the right here because no one is.

I am alarmed though that so many are willing to surrender there rights without so much as a "yeah but." That's fine, however we should not be so quick to castigate somone who is willing to stand for their's. Once seated the seat was his regardless of what UA wanted and calling the cops was fine as far as it goes. Once on site their authority under the law was gone and once they decided to use force their actions became unlawful.

LE should never overstep, ever. But, at what point does it make sense to get your ass beat for standing up to them? I agree they are clearly wrong for what they did, but some shit ain't worth it and I'm one of those that fully believes that the answer to any LEO who asks if they can search your vehicle, home, etc. is "If you are asking, that means you don't have the right to a lawful search". If you did, you wouldn't be asking, I'd be in chilling in cuffs just watching you do it.

I think at 69 years old, you should be a bit smarter.

I would have handled the whole thing in a very different manner. Once the passengers exhibited ownership of my plane, I would have told the pilot and copilot to go chill in the lounge until the passengers decided amongst themselves who wanted to "volunteer" to get off the plane. You think you own my plane? Here, I pay the pilots and I'm paying them to sit on their ass until ya'll figger it out.

Once a seat is occupied that portion of the plane is owned by the occupant as a matter of contract. Refusal to perform by the UA would be a violation of the contract and subject to civil action as well multiplied by the number of passengers (70 I think).

Whether the passenger was smart or not is a matter of debate and really one that only he can answer. What I would do is largely irrelevant.

Well, honestly, from the video the guy didn't seem to make a scene.

Yes, he should have just adhered to the directions the officers were giving him, but he only screamed dramatically at first, then he just stopped, and let the officers (albeit) drag him out of the plane.

However, causing a scene is the guy who fucking starts whaling and flailing his arms and does everything he possibly can to be un-cooperative with police officers in the middle of a crowded area for attention. Those are the people who have no empathy from me and should be treated like a child accordingly.

Also, remember, I doubt United Airline's upper management personally directed this passenger to be removed from the flight. This fiasco was more than likely directed by the United Airline's manager at this specific airport, or even the terminal manager.

United Airlines is probably pretty pissed off that one of their managers / employees brought this upon them. Now THEY are gonna have to sort out the lawsuit, PR nightmare, and all of the meme's that keep churning out.

Most negative opinions seem to be based on short edited cell phone videos of him being dragged, not the facts.

Regardless of your personal opinion, Dr. Dao just made your future flying experiences a little more civil. So the next time you take an "important" flight that is overbooked and you have a seat assignment, you can finally relax as the airlines will no longer be able to force you to give up your seat involuntarily.

For those of you who rarely fly it may not mean much. For those of us that depend on flights frequently and for group TA's like me? Dao is a hero.

I'd love to hear what some posters would say after missing their non refundable $5000 Caribbean cruise with friends simply because an arrogant airline crew decided to take your seat last minute. Yep. You miss the boat. You lose your $5000, but hey...UA gave you a free travel voucher right?

Dr. Dao had a choice to right a wrong that many of us have to deal with. Walking off when asked and complaining after changes nothing. His refusal to comply was not pretty, but it was damn effective!!! As an industry insider and business owner, I applaud him.
