Used ARB Locker (What Do I Check?)

I know what an ARB does but admittedly have no clue how to tell if one might have issues. What should I look for when looking at used ARB? Where is part number stamped? Do they have serial number so I can tell how old it is? Is there a way to make sure it functions?

If that is an arb it is the old 3 piece design. What axle is it for? I would stay away if it’s for a Dana 30. The old Dana 30 arb’s had a tendency to come apart and get crushed when the axle housing flexes. I bought a Dana 30 with an old design arb and the arb was toast.

Check the upper edge of the center portion to make sure it isn’t crushed in like this one.

It is for Dana 44. I knew that older was three piece, which I’m not sure is worth the ask, but wasn’t exactly how tell.

I'm saying that won't work, but it doesn't look like the ARB I had (RD113) for my TJ Dana 44. The copper line is on the other side. I would generally stay away from a used ARB if possible. Otherwise I would replace the o-rings, bonded seal and wave spring if I were to get a great deal on used ARB. Just my $0.02

I ran an old RD06 (Dana 44 4:10s & up) for 16 years without any issues until I needed to replace the bonded seal. It lasted 3 months and I got a new ARB as I thought it was on it's way out. I found out later that the bonded seal I put it was from a bad batch that ARB had. They sent me a new bonded seal and I sold the RD06 to another Jeeper who is still running it as far as I know.

If you get it, do what @sjalkian says and replace those parts. Just make sure the bonded seal is brown and NOT black. The black rubber was the bad batch.
