Until recently I have been will Allstate and they said I was covered while off-roading. I recently switch to AMFam just to find out they don’t cover me off state, city or county maintained roads.

Not sure I want to go back to Allstate due to the high cost of policies.

Anyone else have good experience with an insurance company that will cover our Jeeps while off-roading/crawling?

Its not sirprising to me to see companies shy away from off road coverage. Its extreme, and alot more variables of risk involved

Ive seen alot of dangerous things happen off road, That also comes with “Mods” done by Joe Dirt in his garage that isnt an engineer designing and verifying things properly, but cobbles things together and then rolls themselves

My BIL nearly flipped his $85K invested Jeep twice at Rubicon a few weeks ago, and hes pretty experienced. However SEVERAL Rubicom Gladiators broke and someone for Helo’d out after a roll

You need a better state… this is a county road here…

Switch to AAA they'll take care of you on or offroad. Not to mention AAA is a member-owned not-for-profit company which is typically less expensive than most other companies. And they won't drop you for minor issues like some will.

They gave me no less than 2-3X more than I expected after my previous TJ was stolen. They didn't know about any of my add-ons and upgrades until I gave them a 3 page spreadsheet itemizing everything I had done to it complete with photos and most receipts. AAA didn't know how to value it so they hired an independent adjuster who knew Jeeps. He told me up front they'd take care of me, that most other companies would have dropped me. When I saw the check they gave me afterward it was just almost incredible. More than enough to buy my present used 2004 Rubicon and install things like a new Warn winch.

Then I was wheeling Death Valley years ago when a kid showed up with a Jeep he had just bought. He had seen our posts about going to Death Valley so he just showed up there at our campfire that first night. He wrecked his Jeep that weekend through pure abuse. He had 3 flat tires from stupid stuff and even finally broke his transmission after running into a big rock. We towed him out to the highway and AAA picked him up on a flatbed truck. A month or two later he posted up on our forum to let us know that AAA had bought him four new tires and completely fixed everything he busted and his parents only needed to pay his deductible.

We had our house flooded from a big water filter that blew and the AAA adjuster made it to our house even before I did. They fixed it up totally and even bought me a new pair of dress work shoes because they got ruined from all the water.

I'll never leave AAA.

Well damn, I’m sold. I will call them Monday morning. Thanks! Were those stories recent or a while back?

Been with Allstate for 5 +- years until last week when I switch to AMFam. Over several different phone calls, I asked the local agent at least 3-4 times if I was covered while off-roading including rock crawling and they said yes. After I switched over I wanted to get that in writing from the head agent at the local branch. Turns out they won’t cover beyond maintained roads.

Now because I switched and want to switch within less than a week, my insurance quotes are now +-1000 more a year because I’m looking to switch so quickly (insurance companies like to see 3 or so year of sticking with a company).

I’m beyond frustrated with the local agent but there’s nothing I can do but change to someone that will cover me offroad and pay the higher premium.

Chalking it up to lessons learned

I just throw this out there to warn anyone that switching insurance companies often can penalize you

If an agent tells you the policy covers off road driving I'd read the policy legalese VERY, VERY carefully. Forest Service roads? Probably covered. I've heard that the Rubicon Trail is still classified as a county road. I doubt that but if so maybe you get covered. National Forest high clearance 4x4 trails and off-road parks? I'll bet the policy precludes them or is vague at best giving an adjuster room to deny coverage. And honestly, who the #$%& would even consider filing a claim if damage occurs on a 4x4 trail or in an off road park?

Whatever you do, don't use Liberty Mutual.

They completely screwed me and my wife...and to be fair...she hit me and totalled both our Jeeps...but leaving us stranded on the side of the freeway in the high desert for four hours cause they couldn't figure out how to get us a tow truck is inexcusable.

I pay as little as possible for insurance.
