What paint are you guys using for painting the frame?

Are you all using a primer after you sand the rust off and before painting? I am looking to refresh my TJ.

Like they mentioned, I follow the directions on the can, and this Krylon says direct to metal. When I swapped axles last fall, I sanded any surface rust and got the frame super clean, used mineral spirits to wipe it, let it dry and hit it with this, it has a from factory kind of look and it’s semi flat, so it doesn’t hold dust.
Been only 6 months but so far stays looking super clean. O’reilly’s always has it.

I plan on doing some frame touch-up this summer and although I’d like to use the Krylon Rust Tough it seems it’s hard to get in Canada.
I’m considering using the VHT Roll Bar & Chassis paint since I can get it locally but my question is, being a (one-step) epoxy paint, would it just hide rust like a bedliner does? Or would it still show any future rust like a regular spray paint?

The paint description will tell you if it’s an ”encapsulator.” Either way you should remove the rust entirely if possible, then paint.

I don’t think they always specify if it’s an “encapsulator”, I just looked up the TDS for Rustoleum truck bed coating and nowhere did it say that.

So you’re saying the truck bed coating won’t hide new rust underneath?

An encapsulator claims it cuts off any further rust spreading. Eastwood has one, for example.

If you put the Rustoleum truck bed coating over rust, the rust will keep spreading and come through.

Interesting… I’ve read so many times on this forum that you want to be careful with bedliners because rust will continue spreading underneath the coating due to trapped moisture.
