The top. That sounds like a deep groove though. You are measuring from the backside of the rim, right? Just lay a long ruler or piece of wood across the backside of the rim and measure to the center of the wheel, like the earlier posted pic. Grooves and other things unique to various wheels don't count.
Yeah, I know, looking at that pic it looks like the groove. But there are lots of pics on the web that differ. I think it's the edge... Might take a look at other pics but this one is clearer...
Edit: Also, most manufacturers of wheels for Jeeps with a 5 on 4.5 pattern set backspacing well for us. Most common is around 3.75. Mine are 3.625 and I run 31x10.5r15's and I think they stick out a little too far with my 1.75 lift. But when I get to the 2.5" lift next week, I think they'll be perfect (for me).

Well these new wheels are 3.75. If It is from the outside edge looks like I will have a little wider stance, because from the outer edge of my old Wheels it measures 4 inches
Maybe someone who has more knowledge can solve this slight discrepancy. In the end, it's going to look very much like what you have now, as far as your stance. And by the way, I love those wheels you are looking at in the other thread! As you know, it's hard to find some you really like, so no matter whether the backspacing is 3.75 or 4" (and a thought just occurred, you could call the manufacturer and ask), you probably don't want to keep looking for wheels! You'll go crazy. I did!

I would assume it would be measured from the tire mounting surface as the offset is in relation to the width of the wheel no?
The inner most part of the wheel which would be from the top in that photo since that is the part that would touch the suspension if there was too much backspacing.
