I hate to post but in my 2003 TJR I was able to get an amazing 26.2 mpg on a round trip from Ft Worth to just short of the Oklahoma line on I 35 W.
How did this happen? Well, I was getting my TJ ready to take to the welder to build my cage. So, I had removed my soft top, completely folded down my windshield, and removed the doors when the phone rang. The company I ordered from said your order is in, and we close at three if you get here, you can pick it up. or pick it up on Monday. I will be there. So I jump in my TJ and head out, then notice I need gas and stop at a shell station at the corner of the access road and I 35W.
I head out and drive about 70+ to get there and I arrive a few min. before them locking the doors. I grab my package and turn around to go home. I take my exit and look at my fuel gauge. I am SHOCKED, it looks the needle has barely moved from a FULL tank and I am a top-off guy. I fill till the fuel is at the lip. I go to the same pump at the shell station and fill it to lip. I had thought to zero out the miles at the station and to see how far it was up and back. Results: 26.2 mpg.
YES, you can get good mpg if you take off the top, and doors and fold down the windshield...
Outside of that most of the time I got around 12's...37s, 4:88s and Walker Evans Beadlocks.
