Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

Hmmm... Don't see anything about sheathed cables... I guess I could be remembering wrong.

I don't see anything there either. Might just call and ask.

Yeah, I don't know anything about the establishment. I only responded because you tagged me in the conversation (that wasn't meant to sound shitty!). ;)

Thanks. And you're good.

Pulled the shifter cable loose and found the area that was the problem. It's shifting OK right now so I'm not going to replace the cable.

It's down towards the end near the exhaust. But there's a good inch space so I was shocked to see this. Now if the other heat shielding would arrive I could wrap the cable and put it back together.

Then it's taking the Jeep out for another long drive and see if it helps.

Can you put a cable keeper under one of those transmission pan bolts to keep it as far away the exhaust as possible

The way it bends around there I don't think so. This is area that is getting melted. I might try to make a metal heat shield to put in between.

Is that from heat or rubbing on the driveshaft? It looks more like rubbing and the driveshaft seems to show some wear in the same place?

I'm fairly certain it isn't rubbing but will have to wait until I get it lowered back down to make sure. The rub marks were from the way I'd had it routed before I think. And this cable is a new one from after I'd rerouted things.

Here's pictures I'd taken when I first rerouted the shifter cable and this is at full bump.

You can see that the driveshaft isn't anywhere near the shifter cable. And it isn't touching the exhaust at full bump either.

Even though there is some space between where the shifter cable is & the exhaust it must be getting warm enough to melt the cover so I've got to either wrap it better or as I said try to make a metal heat shield that will help protect the shifter cable more.

I'm pretty sure they're already closed since they're back east but These guys might be able to make you something that is more able to handle high temps.... Might be worth a call?

I'll try this stuff I got from DEI and see if it helps plus might try making a small metal heat shield. If that doesn't work then I'll reach out to them. I don't see anything on their website saying anything about high temp covering but they might offer something.
If I can get this little irritating issue resolved I JUST might have things dialed in... Well maybe

I think building a small metal heat shield might just be the ticket. And I've got a piece of metal I think will work. Going to have to get the CAD design out and see what I can come up with..... Not like I don't have a lot of cardboard laying around.

This picture shows it pretty good as far as the space between the exhaust and the shifter cable. So I think with the cable being triple wrapped with DEI shielding and then some sort of metal heat shield with some heat deflector covering? Might do the trick?

There just needs to be a small air gap between the exhaust and metal shield from how I remember things.

That's the shot. Sorry about thinking it was rubbing, it's not close at all. The exhaust isn't super close either from this shot, but that angle is pretty aggressive. This is a tricky one for sure. I'm sorry I can't be more help.

It's back together and warming up right now. The heat shield arrived today instead of tomorrow like it'd said it would.

I've got this Cool Tube first. And then the Fire Wrap.

20250731_153621.jpg

Then over that the Lava Tube sleeve and right near the exhaust another wrap of the Fire Wrap.

And then some reflector sheet that I wrapped around the cable.

We'll see how this works.

It's OK. The shifter cable was barely rubbing on the driveshaft before. It was one of the reasons I'd moved it.

I'm not sure what else I can do with what I've got if this doesn't work.

For that price it doesn't seem worth fabbing something. Easier to just buy it and be done with it.

We'll see how & if it works/helps. I plan on taking up the forest service road again tomorrow after I go fill it up. Then depending on how things go with it I'll throw the heat shield on Saturday and then install the skids. Then Sunday or Monday I'll take it up to Naches and run some of the trails to see if I've got things worked out.

Getting closer... Also got the new master cylinder from NAPA today and the cheaper Amazon on arrives tomorrow. But I don't seem to have a leak right now. So again I'll be watching and if I get drips I'll swap in the NAPA master cylinder and keep the Amazon one as a spare.
Plus I've got a new Winter's 48" transmission shifter cable that I'll carry with me.

I really am hoping I'm getting CLOSE... I need a break for a while where I've only got to deal with trail breakage and little shit...
