you can probably hide the whole unit behind the glovebox and just use the mic

Yep, a 2' is fine. Gets good enough distance for trail rides and doesn't "snap back" from sticking up to high and hitting limbs.

I also run a handheld and just drop the wires down behind the passenger grab handle on the dash and the handle holds the unit just fine. No permanant mount or holes and very easy to unplug and throw in glove box for out of sight storage.
