Jeep jacking

Hello fellow Jeepsters,

I want to jack up the front of my TJ to do some rust repair chassis welding and also the rear later. Is it safe to jack it with a floor jack directly under the differentials whether its front or rear ? I greatly appreciate any input to this issue. Thanks for reading.

I usually use a 2x4 on the tube to distribute the weight across a wider area(it doesn’t raise it evenly though) then once I get the passenger side raise and a jackstand under it(the control arm attachment point or frame(I don’t put jackstands on the tube) I’ll raise the right by either putting a 2x4 on the pumpkin or sometimes the control arm attachment point.

In general the axles are fine to use as a jacking point, but I avoid putting metal to metal when possible and distribute the load across as much surface as I can.

Its perfectly fine to jack it up on the pumpkin with a floor jack and then place jack stands under the axle tube or the frame.

X2. Our axles are commonly held up in the air by big rocks so a jack won't hurt it either.

Thanks greatly for your response and I really understand your method but what scares me is that in my shop manual it states "do not jack up the Jeep from the axle tubes". i know you can get away with it using your method of lifting but I'm 73 and want to lift the whole thing up at one time. I believe that is for safety/liability reasons so the Jack does not slip off the axle tube, not because it can't handle the weight. Where else are you supposed to put the factory Jack when jacking the vehicle up?
