Measurement Request: OEM Tire Carrier Dimension (mounting depth)

Could someone provide me with the mounting depth for a stock TJ tire carrier (end-to-end mounting surface measurement) in order to help me plan for the following task?

Summary:

I will be switching from a bumper carrier to a MORryde kit. I will be running 5x5.5" bolt pattern MT III wheels (w/ 3.6" BS) and STT PRO 35s (13.1" width tire). The wheels won't be mounted to my current tires until the regear work is done.

My known options:
  • run a tire carrier extender/coupler with a stock tire carrier (will likely push the tire our too far);
  • run a "4x4.5 to 5x5.5" wheel spacer with a stock tire carrier;
  • redrill the stock tire carrier for 5x5.5" bolt pattern; or
  • run an aftermarket tire carrier
Note: I want to keep the tire up against the rubber tailgate pads, which many aftermarket carries do not appear to do.

I'm open to hearing other suggestions

After a lot of research, and a failed attempt at modifying the stock spare carrier, I used the HyLine Offroad spare carrier, which can handle your bolt pattern, but in order to get it to fit on the MoRyde bracket, I had to drill new holes higher up on the bracket. It lowers the tire some, but with my DirtWorx bumper, a 35" tire still clears. I ended up ordering some rubber bar stock and cutting spacers for the stock bumpers.

The website recommends up to a 33” but it’s not clear if that’s due to the 3/16” material thickness or something else like a clearance issue for a larger diameter tire (which u worried around by redrilling).

Did you gusset/reinforce the mount at all to run a 35” tire or is 3/16” plenty good?

Do you mind sharing the approximate diameter and length of your rubber bar stock spacers?
 
I don't have 35s. I run metric 33s. However, when I drilled the holes, I made sure a 35 will fit. The HyLine carrier is gusseted pretty well. If the stock carrier can handle a 35, I think the HyLine will, too. The stock carrier is boxed pretty well, but it's much thinner sheet metal (I think it was 16 gauge when I was messing with it).

I bought a 3' chunk of 1"x2" and a 3' chunk of .125" x 2" Shore A 60 durometer neoprene rubber for the mounts (from McMaster-Carr). For the 1" thick rubber, I used a jig saw to rough cut them and then sanded them to match the stock oval profile using a 12" disc sander. The .125" thick rubber was cut using a scissors. For the top bumpers, which mounted onto the MoRyde bracket, I used just one of the 1" spacers for each. The bottom bumper mounts directly to the tub, so it needed three of the .125" spacers (to make up for the MoRyde thickness), in addition to the 1" spacer. However, depending on the tires and wheels you're running, you may need different thickness spacers. I figured out the thickness I needed by mounting the stock spacers, putting a ball of modeling clay on each one, and mounting the spare tire. The tire compressed the clay, so when I removed the tire, I plunged the depth gauge from my digital calipers through the clay to measure the thickness.

Doesn't address bolt pattern but this is 35” STT Pros on 15x10 rim with 3.625” backspacing using stock carrier

I would definitely like to see your set up when if you have time to share some photos.

Here goes. This shot shows the X-bracing that Hyline puts in the center of their carrier, along with the reason for drilling new holes in the carrier (to clear the top lip on the MoRyde bracket):

Random thought…you happen to have extra material that you would be willing to sell/ship?

Just thought I’d ask since you had to purchase so much material. I’d rather not be wasteful, and I’m happy to put money back in your pocket.

I’ll use my angle grinder and cutter/flapper wheels to do the job and plan to install the items in about three weeks.
