Hi - hoping someone here can critique a gear pattern for me. Figured it was easier to create a new thread than clutter up someone else's. This is my first attempt at this work, so hoping I'm at least in the ballpark.

Dana 35, Eaton e-locker, 4.56 Revolution gears. Backlash is currently at .008.

The rub mark in the bottom picture is from an early attempt where the pinion was set too deep. No contact currently.

just hitting it to keep his thread active -

First two pics look like you are a touch deep. The third is weird is it from a different setting?

No, all from the same setting. I was a little thrown by that as well, but this is also my first time doing this. Wasn't sure if that was normal, or if something is off. Best I can tell, everything is clean and square, and the carrier was tightened down while I was checking the pattern.

My pinion preload may be a smidge low at the moment since I'm using the old crush sleeve for setup (around 12 inch lbs). Could that potentially cause the issue you're seeing?

I would repaint the gears and then roll them while taking a small pry bar and wedge it between the diff housing and carrier to add a bit of drag. That bit of pressure helps get a little better imprint in the paint.

At the amount not really but I would take the crush sleeve out and just tighten the nut to get desired preload.

edit- misread the post. What’s your backlash? I think it needs backed off.

Don't use a crush sleeve during setup. Pull it out and then tighten the pinion nut until it drags just a little.

Different parts of the ring gear? Have you checked the ring for runout?

No, all the same part of the ring gear. I'm going to pull the crush sleeve, clean everything up, and test again. I think I had too much paint and not enough drag, which may have resulted in a poor picture of what's actually taking place.

All in all, pretty happy with how it's going. My first settings had contact way high and towards the heel of the gear, so it's at least shifted in the right direction.

Made some adjustments. How does this look?

And probably a stupid question, but how important is the pattern on the coast side of the gear?

That's why I asked 😂 Contact on the coast side has been high in all of my settings. Wasn't sure how important it was to try to balance, vs perfecting the drive side.

I think you're there. I would add 3 thou just to see what would happen to the coast side.

Hey,

New guy here. Been reading here for awhile but just registered to help with this thread.

Not a Jeep expert but I've done a bunch of gears for Ford 9 inch circle track stuff.

I'd shim the pinion deeper. Move that drive contact patch in deeper and see what you have for a coast pattern then.
