Hi everyone, I'm working on regearing my tj to 4.88s and was hoping someone could chime in on the gear pattern for my front LP dana 30. By my untrained eye, I would say the pinion is a maybe a little too deep?

Pinion preload is ~20 in/lbs, backlash is about 0.008"

I've read a lot of other forums posts from people also checking their gear pattern and from what I have gathered this pattern is possibly acceptable.

Thoughts on if this pattern is runnable? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Paint is definitely too thick. Thin it out with gear oil and only paint 3-5 teeth.

When you're running the pattern your providing drag on the pinion, right...gloved hand or something?

I have my opinions but I defer to @hosejockey61 and @Blackjack

Good too know my paint is too thick, I'll make sure to start thinning it out

And yes, I was applying load to the ring gear with a glove when I ran this pattern

What brand gears? It looks better to me but I defer to hosejockey.

Being a front axle you should focus on the coast side

With it being a LP 30 you are driving on the coast side so you want to focus on that part of the pattern over the drive side. Also being a front I will run a touch on the deep side over shallow.

Don’t forget too that you are worried about the pattern’s position from root to crown. If the pattern runs a bit towards the heel or toe it will run just fine.

I personally like the pattern in post #6 buy that's just me. Heel to toe isn't an issue, it's root to topland you need to focus on. It'll run just fine out there.

I'm planning on playing around a little more with it tomorrow to see if I can get the pattern a little more centered. But I know that I have a pattern good enough to call it done. Thanks for the help everyone!

You'll pull your hair trying and failing to do so. They set up where they set up. You might move it a tiny bit, but you'll still end up with no hair when your done.
