Gear pattern check

This isn’t for my LJ, but for my Willys project.

Front axle is out of a Roxor (Dana 44) low pinion

Installed 4.56s and a Detroit.

Thoughts on this pattern? I feel like the coast side is a little toward the heel too much. I’m right on 0.008” of backlash.

Really close. You are right though, a little on the heel side of the coast. Most would run that, some would perfect it. Pattern over backlash for me every time

Is the pinion too shallow?

It's very close, but your pinion is slightly too deep. Back off just a tad and run another pattern to see how it improves. When you have a harsh flat line on the bottom of the tooth, that indicates the pinion is too deep. Backing off a touch should give you that oval pattern.

Yeah I applied pressure to the carrier with an old glove while spinning it with a drill but had issues with my drill chuck spinning on the socket adapter.

IF so, it doesn't see much action anyways. You could get it closer, but I don't think it matters so much being the front

Correct, front axle Dana 44 LP going in a '46 Willys rock crawler...

try another pattern with .003"-.005" out of pinion shim. Personally, I like to see the contact favor the toe on the drive side of the tooth.

Took .003” out of the pinion shim.

Also want to clarify, these are face milled not face hobbed.
